A quick gripe (note I usually see this crap in Ebay ads)

It seems so dumb to me- how many ads I see where people put "1996 F355 Ferrari- Fast", " 360- Fast car!" or whatever in a ad line. Is it really necessary to put something like that in a title line, or even description? It makes me question the seller's maturity, and knock 10% off what I'd be willing to pay (i.e. seems likely driver beat on the car, while may not be the case still seems like it to me due to lower maturity level) if not skip even taking the car seriously.

Another thing is having a girl on the car with her legs spread open, wearing a bikini- same thing as above- I question the integrity/maturity of the seller and would lean on taking a pass on the car.

Just thought I'd gripe on a rainy Sunday while I surf the net :)

They are trying to lure in a certain type of buyer. Buyers like you and me know what type of car we are looking for, we know what to look for in the car. These dealerships and sellers are looking for somebody who knows nothing about the car looking to overpay on an impulse buy and they use luring things like girls in bikinis and words like "fast". I inquired on one of these cars because I was interested in the car they had the salesman knew absolutely nothing about the car all he could tell me was that it would smoke a Vette, and drop panties.

I hate seeing "fast" in an ad for Ferrari or any sports car for that matter. I suppose if you didn't know the car you were shopping was "fast" it would be helpfull, but does anyone shop for a sports car that isn't fast? Would you advertise a 4000 square foot home as huge?

Ha. I never really paid attention to that. Sounds like a great negotiation tool. If youre in the market for a 360 or something and it says FAST. Tell them compared to a Gallardo or Z06 its a lead sled. "I just looked at a Z06 for 1/2 the price. What can you do for me? This is a slow boat car! I aint paying you $160,000!"

Always look for the positive angle.

It's kind of like the word "quality" in most advertising. Saying it doesn't make it more convincing...

However "fast" may be appropriate w/ certain touring cars like 456, 550, Aston Martin DB9,Vanguish, Masserati.....but then again Joe Walsh summed that up...185mph, right

Fast in the title will help it get hits in more searches. So people say Ferrari-Fast to get more hits on their auction.

I was the internet sales manager at a dealership for while. Dealerships don't really expect to sell cars via the Ebay auction. They are really trying to ge people interested in calling/coming to the dealership. The more eyes that see the add the more calls/warm bodies the dealer gets a chance to try and sell a car to. People who aren't dealers do it because they figure if a dealership does it and they are successful, then I will be successful if I do it.

Interesting theory Dave, but I don't know- to me, a professional dealer that sells high end sports cars on a regular basis shouldn't resort to such tactics (putting "fast" in the title or having half naked women spralled out on the cars). When I search a database like ebay, I search for "Ferrari" or "F355", not "fast"....could be just me though ;) Plus you have real world experience with this...but it just turns me off though.

If I put "Goes 185!!!" on my Maserati ad before I sold it, I wonder if I would have got more money.

Ya put FAST in the title to prove you're not selling a 328 or Mondial or some similar dancing donkey.

No doubt "fast" is put in the same ads with "genuine miles"...which is used by people to ensure that they havent used cheap imitation miles (look the same but are a bit shorter)

I saw an ad that stated the car had a rare VIN! I thought all cars had one of a kind VIN's.

You don't buy a Ferrari because it's fast. You buy it because it's quick.

You never heard of "fastsilver" have you? ;)

I thought up the "quicksilver"/"fastsilver" comparison after a discussion with a local cop who thought the EVO "looked fast".

I tried to explain that a Buick trucking along in a straight line at 100 is "fast", but a sports car that takes turns at a bit below the speed limit is "quick".

When I was in Massachusetts, there was a game I'd play on the evening commute. Speed limits are pretty much ignored around there, and a ricer or boxter or etc would go zipping away on the straights. But since most drivers come nearly to a halt whenever the road curves, I'd see how long I could maintain contact ... without ever exceeding the speed limit.

At one point an SLR, a 911, and the 328 were all in a bungee-cord line, with the trailing 328 keeping to the limits, but catching up in turns. That went on through four different towns, before the porker turned off and the merc stopped for gas.

The most extreme case was a racing bike of some sorts that accellerated like a rocket around me, but I had to brake down hard to keep from ramming him at the next set of turns.

"Fast" just takes ponies. I'll take "quick" any day.
