Perfect example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4548582996&category=6212 Ferrari badge on the back. Ferrari center caps in the wheels Ferrari badge on steering wheel Ferrari floor mats Only thing it's missing is SF badge to the fender Why do people do this? Be proud of your Dino!
Ugh... by far the worst violations are the floormats that were embroidered with "Ferrari" in a generic font.
WHY NOT? Why did the 308 Dino get Ferrari badging and not the 206 and 246? Grandit, it is better than having "Fiat" but Dino is Enzo's son. I find it the same issue as Ferrari owners sticking on the vinyl Scuderia badge on the fender when the car never had the ceramic one installed originally. Personal taste, or insult to the purists. I say leave the owners alone.
If i had a 308 GT4, i would leave it the way it is. Even if it had ferrari badges some people wont even know what it is, but in the ferrari circle the GT4 is well know and loved (like any ferrari/dino) cheers George. edit: by actually clicking on the link I see you are talking about a 246, If you ever read "Mechanics' Tale" by steve matchett he has a funny story about this very topic.
I guess I need to re-read that. edit, oh, now I remember, it was the story about the valet in monaco... funny stuff
Why does Ferrari slap Ferrari badges and the SF badge all over EVERY model ... do Italians not understand the word: discrete, talk about tacky. Even my Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV has twice the number of badges it needs ... it's embarrassing. And yes well aware that Dino's shouldn't have Ferrari anywhere on them ... on the outside ... Pete
Its not the factory, its the customers. They are the ones asking for it. And Ferrari is only too willing to take their money...
Actually the Dino 308 GT4 did not come with Ferrari badging, that is until they sat on dealer lots unsold because buyers wanted Ferrari badges. The factory started modestly labeling them as such with the series 2 ('76) and many series 1 cars were retro fitted as well. Some retros had an F badge added above the Dino badge, some replaced it. One point to remember is that there were no "Ferrari" cars available in the US at the time that the Dino 308 GT4 (series 1) was being sold. People knew it was a Ferrari and wanted it labeled that way. If my GT4 had come with a Dino badge I would leave it that way. I agree about the "shields" that are put on street cars. A racing heritage is something to be proud of for sure, but a SF shield doesn't make a 3X8 etc. into a "factory" team race car any more than a big wing on the back of a 4-door automatic Honda Accord.
Many dealerships outside europe had a concern selling a Ferrari that did not have the badge on the back. Therefore many US and Australian dealers added the badges before they hit the showrooms.
While we are on this subject...We were having a friendly discussion with a friend about if the FACTORY ever put Ferari badges on Dino's or if that was something the dealers did to boost sales?
206/246 never had factory Ferrari badges. 308 GT4 series 1 cars never had them. Later series cars did.
and that was because later GT/4 series were officially brandend Ferrari, no? Funny how Ferrari´s moneymaker stems from the Dino´s. Factory Dino´s were never badged as Ferrari´s. Just wear the Dino-name with pride!
Ferraris are the last cars that need badges. Do owners need reassurance that they are driving the best? Do bystanders need to look at the badge to work out what kind of car it is? In my mind, the Dino 'legend' is contingent on having no badges. To put badges on a Dino is to be oblivious to the tragedy and folklore that led to the car being named as it is and not being badged as a Ferrari. T.
But the question was, "Why do owners badge them?" Dealers sometimes did it to help sell the cars originally. My Dino sat at the dealer for a year and a half before it finally sold, without an badges. The red, white and blue color scheme may have had something to do with that. I think in the 70's, some owners badged the cars as a pride issue. After all, despite what the brochure says, it is a Ferrari, and why not let the world know it as you drove the car. Others stuck the badges on to enhance re-sale value back then. Same issue, I suspect. Make it clear that the car was a Ferrari, not a Friggin' FIAT. I don't know of any Dino owners who have stuck the badges on the cars recently, but if it was originally put on with bolts through the body, short of a respray, you're stuck with them now. It's no longer necessary to put them on. Anyone buying one now knows the history, at least a little of it, and certainly the legacy of the 246 Dino being a Ferrari. Well, "Almost a Ferrari". DM
No....THIS is a perfect example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4546587857
The irony is that the original factory team race cars responsible for the legend never had ceramic SF badges; they were just stickers (paint on the very earliest).
When the 206/246 Dino came out, it was a RADICAL departure from the 12 cylinder, front engine market that Ferrari had historically sold cars in. So much so, that many Ferraristi (if not all) defined a Ferrari as having 12 cylinders. Perhaps the factory wanted to distance themselves should this new car not be taken well by the public. In fact, the car was NOT a big hit in Europe. As we look at the Dino's today, we see the wonderful style with an excellent mid-engine layout for weight/balance that has pervaded through Ferrari's fleet for 35 years and wonder why this wasn't the flagship then. The answer is that it was so different that it was risky.
True, a v-6 "Ferrari" would most not likely fly with the majority. "What? Half of a Ferrari?" I can probably see that behind the scenes, why they had Fiat make it. Dino info alwasys fascinates, I learned some new things!
( i think ) that car has been for sale for around $14k. i have been very interested in it as a toy, but i never could get anyone to answer the phone. PPI is a must as who knows what the miles are or how good the compression is. oh yeah........... if i bought one and it had no badges, i would add them nanny nanny boo boo
