I don't understand it, I have been looking a 355s and 348s and more then half of them that I have looked at have aftermarket radios. I don't understand why, considering the original radio has a nice Ferrari enblem on it, and probably does sound fine. Is it because they are bad quality and break easily, or is it because all the wealthy people with high standards wanted a better sounding stereo?

    Thanks,
    John

Because the stock sound systems are not really very adequate.

and, if it craps out, VERY EXPENSIVE to replace. Excellent radio aftermarket = $1000 Ferrari ( at least for the 360) charges $1600 for the lousy stock one.

I'm not positive about 348s, but some Ferraris such as the 328 and 308 were not equipped with a factory supplied radio/head unit. The car was supplied with speakers, wiring, and an antenna. The choice of radio/head unit was left up to the owner and/or dealers.

    Best regards,
    Dino

I think your right about that and I think 348'a and mondials were the same. In my 365 I have an original Tape deck that my father had put in back in 78. Its adequate but honestly who needs a radio in a Ferrari, they are music in their own right!

My new 328 came standard with a plastic plate over the empty radio compartment slot. There was a custom car stereo and alarm shop next store to the ferrari dealer. (What a coincidence). On top of paying for the car in 86 I ended up shelling out an extra 2K for the blaupunkt fm radio/cassette deck. more powerful speakers and custom proximity alarm for the car. As I recall the basic alarm system was also pretty poor . At the time I spec'd it, I was told that the stock radio was so bad that all dealers were telling customers to order their cars without them and custom build their own system.

You are correct about a plate over an empty radio slot. All 328s that were delivered in the USA were delivered without a radio, they came with a vinyl or leather covered (depending on your dashboard) blanking plate...there was no stock radio for a 328 (maybe the dealer was too embarassed to say there is no radio included). My car was originally delivered with a leather covered blanking plate and we had an Alpine single CD player and ADS amp installed.

    Best regards,
    Dino

i have posted this before, but my QV still has the block off plate, and thats the way it should be. there is no need for a radio in a proper sports car. we dont need 900 hp cars, we need 2000 lb cars with 400 hp, and none of the fat crap on them.

i would love a ferrari with no a/c and roll up windows. i detest how heavy cars have gotten.

rant over, i feel better now.

yes, i also installed my chrome shift ball, so no comments on the crooked skinny ferrari one in the pic. i am missing the damn lock nut on the shift lever, and have been unable to match the threads with what i have on hand.

As of this week, all three of mine have Sony head units so I can listen to my iPod on longer runs.

I agree, you shouldn't need a radio in a Ferrari, but the only thing that annoys me is when people replace the original stereo system with some custom system, it jsut does not look got to me, all the 355s came with a radio standard, and I would plan on using the radio, but I would want to have to look at some ugly aftermarket radio instead of a nice radio with the Ferrari emblem on it.

I know in the 360 CS and the F430 S the radio is optional, and I think they don't have A/C, no A/C is a little hard considering most people only drive their Ferrari in the summer.

Actually the black shifter knob is the original one, its just not facing the right way, if I were you, I would keep the original. I just don't like aftermarket parts.:-D

i have rotated the same chrome one on and off all 5 of the 308's that i have had so far. the original goes on when the car gets sold. i like the feel of the larger chrome one better. point taken though.

Only the very late 99 355 cars had the Becker stereo with the horse on it..All others were the Sony cassette player that sounded horrible and did not have a horse on them...

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but why would you want a radio in a Ferrari in the first place!?!? What can POSSIBLY sound better than the engine note coming out of the exhaust pipes!?!?! :D

I remember back in the late 80's I went with a fellow high school classmate to take a look at a Countach and while there the sales guy took us in the back to take a look at a 308 that used to be owned by Michael Landon (little house) it was black at the time and had the biggest stack of stereo equip i have even seen in a car. To this day i have never seen a stack like that again. It must have cost boatloads back in the 80's. Wonder what happened to that car......
