Why does an F1 steering wheel have a clutch paddle?

    Probably a dumb question... but I was looking at this picture (below) and
    see it has a clutch paddle - possibly two of them. I thought the computer
    did the clutching in F1 shifting... if so, why would the driver ever want
    to manually clutch? And why would there be two of them? I assume
    just ergonomic convenience...

    Educate me :)

    Race start. Can't roll off using paddles, IIRK. That's why sometimes you see them stall in pits (Super Aguri!) or sometimes after a spin.
