My new 328 came with an "anti-theft" ignition key. They key has a hinge in it and will bend to 90 degrees. How does this make it anti-theft? Anyone know the purpose of this feature? Can I get a replacement key without this? Are there options to get a more attractive key like the more current models? Thanks.

Your key bends so that when you slam your knee into it the key doesn't break off in the ignition.

I've never heard it referred to as an anti-theft key. It's simply the stock 328 key. Of course, I guess it's easier to steal a 328 that has the key broken off in the ignition :D

Yeah, I always thought the key was sort of strange too....

My 328 came with the hinged key as well. When I asked my dealer to have a full second set of keys made, the new ignition key was indeed NOT the bending type but a simple black plastic with a silver prancing horse on it.

My manual (1986 Euro model) also lists the key as an anti-theft ignition key. I'm with you - I don't understand the anti-theft part...

I found a guy in the ghetto that cuts mine (standard blank) for $3.

He could probably hot wire it in about 30 seconds......LOL!

Great question! I have also always wondered what was going on here. I think it's art personally. Very cool art.
