    Many reasons really:
    - the first 200mph roadcar
    - the first all carbon/kevlar road car
    - uncompromising on weight, power, and driving experience
    - the first car to truly translate Ferrari's racing expertise into a roadcar (excluding the 250 GTO!).

Personally, I am a big fan of the F50:
    - genuine F1 approach to a roadcar with race-derived V12 and gearbox bolted directly onto the carbon tub
    - great with the targa top off
    - more driveable than the F40
    - better quality than the F40.

The F40 was an instant hit, whereas the F50 was "misunderstood" - very few were allowed to be driven by journalists so they slated it!

    Just my thoughts, not gospel!!

Simple, the F40 was the first real Supercar. Some try to claim that title for the Muria, but it ain't so. The F40 was the first, in yer face, outrageous, you'd have to be a nut to drive one, super car.

To echo's RTB comment on the journalists , there are much less F50's around so people have much less real life experience than with an F40 and since the journos didnt appreciate it , they will repeat what they read..

I love the F50 more and more eventhough i have never been in one.

We had another thread like this recently. To the suggestion that the F50 is underappreciated, I'd say: show me a US spec F50 for sale. I've seen the one or two converted Euro cars.

I have only seen on euro F50 for sale; I assume they are legitimate to drive on our street in the US....must be little difference between the two. I think the F50 is gorgeous ( as most F cars are) but the F40 is Enzo's last car, i love it.

Nope. Not Legal, unless federalized. All US version F50's are 1995 IIRC...

Having been lucky enough to sit in both cars, I would say that they are completly different beasts.

    F-40
It is raw, in your face driving.

    F-50
Is significantly more refined, luxury type car. No it isn't a Bentley in the luxury amenities category, but is not the pure bread race car on the street that the F-40 is.

That said, if I had the chance to pick up one of them and only one of them I would get the F-40. If my wife had any say (and she does, don't get me wrong) in the matter she would insist on the F-50.

    For whatever its worth....

F40....so many descriptions that still fall short of the actual experience...thats what makes it special. How do you quantify emotion ? It delivers on so many levels, that an overall encompassing statement is futile.

The F50 was wonderful to drive....felt a bit more disconnected from the road than the edged, sharp F40....once the F50 revs come up though, it is quite satisfying.

Most cars will dip in the public eye at some point...early 70's cars suddenly found reacclaim starting in the 80's...the F40 was and has been consistently received as an example of the very best that Ferrari can produce, hence its undisputed Supercar status.

The MB 300sl is a cool car. Absolutely stunning. It is fast. But an F40 it will never, ever compete with on any level. Even with the doors up doing 100 mph.
The F40 is absolutely the most pure, raw driving experience I have ever had.

    +1. Very true.

I think it is ammusing how the F50's status has elevated with time. Hmm, guess I picked the right favorite to begin with...:)

It is a tribute to the F40, however, that it was such a big instant hit and continues to remain that way. Even though cars are constantly surpassing it in terms of overall performance it remains an icon in the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere. Very cool.

The looks. We're all superficial. It's about desirability.

I recall one euro car magazine testing all the super-ferrari's (enzo, f-50, f-40, 288gto) at once and concluding that the F-50, with its gearbox bolted directly onto the carbon tub, among other things, had the most involved feel and was thus the funnest to drive.

In other words, the f-50 was the real f-40.

Also, the interiror. Its raw, stripped out racing look--even plastic wiindows and cords for door handles on some models--gave rise to a cult of authenticity. For the same reason people prefer sashimi over california rolls, cabernet over merlot, keith richards over mick jagger...

Personally, I find the F40 to be one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever made. It's just a magnificent car.

The F50 is simply unobtainium, especially in a US version.
But, if you know the right people and are willing to accept an F40 in the deal as well, I happen to have a very good line line on such a pair, available for sale right now!

F40 was ordered by Enzo...pure and simple.

It is what he wanted.................and the funny part about it is that its essentially a stripped down 308 with a 308 engine with turbos. Simple, easy, and magical...no driver aides, no ammenities.....just you and the best gocart in the world.

    The long way home
If you could enlighten me, what does get you in the door?

    (F40) $600,000 + (CGT) $400,000 + (F50) $800,000 = $1.8... close, no?

Tell me, how well do you know the seller :D ?
