The colors that Lamborghini tends to use look great with the excessive gold worn by most of the owners - just a humble observation.
Ferrari red is classic and bespeaks decades of racing history, "heritage'" and "soul." And it really looks good on someone wearing a Ferrari hat, shirt, shorts, and socks and pretending their car is an Enzo.
A lot of potshots here about Lambos and their owners. Why? I've owned a bunch of Ferraris, currently own a Lambo, and don't feel the need to **** on Ferraris. Nor do I believe that praying at the altar of the prancing horse, its F1 successes and its history and mythology necessarily translates into a more desirable road car. In fact, the current production cars (I don't consider the Enzo to be a production car) leave me a little uninspired. I'll grant you, the 430 seems to have the performance on paper (haven't driven one yet, but i'm sure I will), and the aesthetics are a mixed bag- partly a carry over of the 250LM inspired 360, and partly faux Enzo. The 12 cyl. cars are, at least for now, even more disappointing- the 612 is a luxo barge- and has alot of critics even among ferrari enthusiasts, at least for its outward appearance. The 575 is very long in the tooth, and its replacement seems to be even bigger- not in the direction of a sportscar, but a large GT. Many, including me, have longed for a stripped down 12, a sort of big brother to the CS. For now, the most credible car Ferrari has offered in recent times is the CS- precisely because it traded off the luxury/comfort items which entice a certain customer, for more hard-core sporting attributes. So, while you might find the stereotype of the Lambo owner amusing- just think about this- most of us have owned ferraris, and could own more, right now (and not just the inexpensive ones toward the bottom of the F-car food chain). How many taking pot shots at Lambo here can say they've owned one? My guess- Zero.
I could see myself driving a new Ferrari in a drastic pearl white, or limited Mystic shift, or drippy candy apple, or liquid heavy metal flake silver. There are lots of extreme paint effects I think would look good on a new Ferrari. Just not puce.
I value everyone's individual opinion on most everything, but neon colours on a Ferrari will make me lose my lunch! Just doesn't work for me. Some article I read when I was younger (and had all my hair on my head and none on my back) wrote about colours of cars. I remember the following: Ferrari's are red Lamborghini's are black Jaguars are british racing green Porche's are silver
Comes from the old national F1 colors: Italy red, Britain green, France blue, Germany white (which became de facto silver), USA blue/white, Belgium yellow, etc. Both Lotus and Jaguar today seem to have gotten away from that rotten-avocado BRG to "Jaguar/Lotus RG", a rich metallic green. Aston also has a new metallic green of its own. Thank goodness. Don't know why Lambo would favor black, except to differentiate itself from red-obsessed Ferrari, or possibly because Countachs looked so downright evil in gloss black.
I recall early Lamborghinis (GT350/400 etc.) favoring silver, black or white mostly. It was the Miura which IIRC was the first Lambo to wear really wigged out colors like Lime Green or electric blue. No doubt this was partly cultural since it was introduced in the Psychedelic era. Funny thing is that the Miura, a stunning beautiful car, didn't need those colors to attract attention although it managed to carry them quite well. Later Lambos IMHO have been a little less successful at carrying them. FWIW-I can still remember seeing a silver 250GT Lusso Berlinetta back in '64, no other color flatters that car as much, certainly not red or yellow.
I argree with you about the Lusso and there has been a post on the lambo yahoo group about a couple of factory restored 400gt that were both painted a metallic gray. I have seen more silver than anything though, although the car 350/400gt)is stunning in red as well.
I think as recent Ferrari's have less elegant designs that they could wear louder colors....that orange 430 is a perfect example, it wears it well IMO. The 550/575 and Enzo could also pull it off, of course there is one orange Enzo that I know of. Tradition is the only thing holding the color range back.
