Had a starting problem on my 355 and I know its the starter, likely the solenoid. My question is upon researching I found threads on the flywheel needing to be regreased and wonder the theory on how this worked? Thanks in advance
Ok I was drunk when I posted this and my fingers were too fat. Why does flywheel grease help our cars start when they were acting up?
According to what I have read (and tend to agree with) is that, if the flywheel grease has leaked out or has been diluted by the transmission oil, the flywheel will rattle on start-up, especially when hot. This rattling/knocking is transmitted to the engine where it is picked up by the knock sensors. The signal will fool the ECU-s into thinking that the engine is knocking (detonation) and they will instantaneously retard the ignition timing in an attempt to eliminate the "engine knock". With retarded ignition timing, it can be quite difficult to start the engine. One starting method that may work in such a case is to engage a gear and, with the clutch pressed, crank the engine.
