I have been here for over a year now and this is what I have observed,
I rarely make post because frankly most of the time I get the standard, "Do a Search"........ which is fine, I have no problems with that, I always do search first, but sometimes need a specific topic to search for. When someone points me in that direction then I'm off to the races.
Ferrari-chat has been a truly invaluble resource in my purchase search and knowlege building of these these cars. I have met numerous people on here and have been truly inspired by their knowlege and love of these cars and would have to say that the tifosi here is one of my reasons for choosing and falling in love with this marque. Rob, Bruce, speedy, NNO, Mike C, and MANY others have helped me go from a ferrari fan to a true enthusist, that is one of the main reasons for this site ! To help others enjoy the marque, if not, then why are you all here, why not just go drive your cars and enjoy them by yourselves.
I can't thank these guys enough for the help they have offered me. I like many others here didn't know a 360 from 355 when I joined. But have over months and months of posts and research grown to love these cars and know more about these beautiful machines and their fascinating history than I could have ever imagined.

last year the "Old F-Chat" was better in my opinion, it was more about the cars and ALOT less argueing, (although we had the Greens and Allans to content with) but then again it had 3,700 members, less than a year later we have almost TRIPLED to 8,700 members. member/owner ratio has dropped WAY down, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I do think that it is safe to say that owners (or past) owners on a whole have more GOOD topics/post relating to these cars than do non-owners, why because they KNOW these cars, this is just common sense. I'm thankful and surprised that they read/answer and participate as much as they do, most of them have heard the questions we silly "newbies" ask more times than we have seen a Ferrari in person.
The problem lies in the fact that after 316,385 post how much more can be said the hasn't been said before ? thats over 3 1/2 post per every car Ferrari has ever produced !!! Could it be that Ferrari chat is getting, shou we say "boring" ?
As For the old timers (with all due respect, only in f-chat years) why do they even still log on everyday put up with all the BS that goes on here ?? Why, because they like myself still feel that, if they..... learn one thing new, meet one new friend, help someone with a problem, get help with a problem, see an enthusaist go from a non-owner to a owner, and hear the joy in the post of that, "I FINALLY BOUGHT ONE" post, it brings a smile to their face, because maybe they helped in some small way or remember the feeling they had when their first Ferrari pulled into their drive way for the very first time, that feeling, that indescribable feeling is what this site is about, or is for me anyway..................................all I can say is I'm glad they do............

Let me get academic for a second...

    1) Users go through their own life cycle in this community. I've seen it hundreds of times and it will be thousands within years. You enter the community in awe and you're amazed with all the information. Some immerse themselves slowly and others dive right in. There are hundreds of users that will end up with 1-3k posts their first couple of years. At some point you've seen 95% of the topics come up before, there are 900 new users a month that you're not familiar with, and all you can remember is when a couple years ago it was smaller and new to you.

It's still a site of value and something you want to participate in, but you're now to a level of maturity that doesn't need to visit the board each day making a dozen posts.

    2) Quality of postings. A little tie-in to #1, but new users typically have to evolve their familiarity with the community, the communities familiarity with them, and their initial excitement where they feel like every little thing requires a post. With 800+ new users a month going through this growth process there will always be some lower quality posts to wade through.

    3) All the "mature", "respected", and "old timer" users of FerrariChat.com went through the same user life cycles as everyone else. Do you dare me to pull up crazy-flaming-irrelevant posts by some of the most respected mature users of FC today? Bruce would happen to be an easy target as that goes, but so would I. I went through that exact same learning process as everyone else. And Jonas, imagine how crappy this community would be if the 800+ new users a month acted like you did your first two months?

Things are larger, but the percentage of mishaps I think is much less, but with so many more users even a smaller % is going to leave us with a higher count of bogeys on the radar screen.

Some things I think you can be optimistic about with FerrariChat.com...

    1) Troll Control: There are still the troll fans and still the just ignore the trolls sect, but in the long run nothing was lost by loosing some trolls and the majority of users that didn't want to put up with them anymore have the higher quality community they wanted. Zero lost, and gain judged only on an individual basis.

    2) Growth & Diversity: More and more Ferrari enthusiasts and owners from around the world are discovering FerrariChat.com on a daily basis. Yes it takes awhile for them to be integrated in the community, but these are knowledgeable passionate people.

    3) Small Community Niches: Everyone just needs to give up now if they want to read every single post from every forum. I don't even read more than 50% of the posts. Each user can participate in the mass forums like General Discussion or you can still find that old small community feel in forums like Subscribed, Regionals, Vintage, Racing, Collectables, and etc..

    4) Quality Controls: One day long ago there were no controls, I still believe in letting the community evolve itself and for the most part self regulate. For those outlying situations we have a great team of moderators and will shortly publish some high level forum guidelines for users. If you think a post or user is an "outlier”, just "!" it.

    5) Additional Features: My list is now up to 70+, but you will always see additional features added over time. Some upcoming new features are an online chat room (which may take some of the casual less quality posts off the forum) and a FAQ to cover both Ferrari and Community usage topics.

In closing I want to say I appreciate everyone's participation in the FerrariChat.com community. I appreciate your feedback and *****ing, as that means you care about the community and want it to be successful long-term. We are large and we are diverse, I don't expect to please everyone, but I think users will be happy if they are a Ferrari enthusiast, have at least a few technical/internet skills, and don't take anything too seriously.

Everyone should really think about what it means to be a good part of this community and try to loosely guide others that direction too. When things go wrong, it's not Rob's fault, a moderators fault, or their fault. It should be OUR problem and WE should work together on it.

What we have here is a small sized city that is more diverse than any other city in the world. Recognize and respect that we're all just humans with hopefully one beautiful thing in common besides being human.

    Thanks,
    rob

Rob, great post. I feel with all the 'n3wbs' the best way is to be polite and repeat, often times the same post, over and over. I dont know how many "will xxx ferrari wheels fit on my xxx?" I have posted the same info. in now. But it was because of other members I was able to learn the material, so I feel it is my duty to do the same.

The same should be for any 'old time' user. I am almost positive the site has contributed at minimum *some* knowledge to you. Do you not feel it is your duty to thus give back the same? Even if the question is 'how many cylinders are in a TR?" :p I am willing to bet that at one time in your life you did not know either, so just answer the question and nicely go on. When newbies start flames over nonsensical stuff its plain annoying. When old timers do it its disgraceful.

LEAVE BRUCE ALONE. HE'S NOT A RACIST, HE'S NOT LEAVING, HE'S JUST EXPRESSING HIS OPINION. GET OVER IT.

I have to agree 250% with NNO on this. Bruce is nothing but the nicest guy I know from here. He actually makes people become better people by knowing him. If anyone has something bad to say about Bruce why don't you PM me first and I will have a little chat with you about Bruce.

Now i'm in it and i don't want to be in it, but some people are so foolish sometimes...

First of all, someone mentioned something about post count or senority or whatever... That kinda stuff DOES hold weight in some regards. This is one of them... When i first got here, i wasn't particularly fond of Bruce... Bet you folks didn't know that, huh...? Yeah, well, he wasn't exactly my cup of tea... But then :::gasp::: i got to know him...! Then i spoke to him for the first time on the phone and i literally laughed from start to finish... Then i met him at Classic Coach and the rest is history...

OMG, what cool f ucking guy... Now, for some of you newer folks, you see only what's been displayed since you've arrived and can't fathom how others can praise Bruce the way we do... To that i say, get to know him.

Despite HUGE problems in his life, like losing his sight for a while, he's still the nicest guy you'll ever come across... He's not racist 'cause if he was, he wouldn't be MY friend... Bruce speaks 4 different languages and knows more about more cultures than Alex Trebec... There are very few people who can intelligently converse on such a broad scope of subjects...

Now, let's lock this thread and go on with our day.

I, for one, am not going to stand up for Bruce. All he's ever done for me was to invite me into his home like a long-lost brother, and introduce me to his wonderful family. Then he had the nerve to take me to dinner at his Uncle's restaurant, and load me up with free batteries, flashlights and stuff. A chump like that doesn't deserve anyone's support. (-:

    Bruce,

Illegitimi Non Carborundum. (Don't let the bas(*&*%s grind you down.) I hope I have a chance to meet you some day. Maybe Monterey in Aug. hint, hint.

I find it really ironic that Bruce complained about signal to noise being poor, and this entire thread is proof of his assertions.
