    Background: I bought my 512 TR as a stepping stone. I remember when the TR came out many years ago, and I was one of those that was not too impressed. Ferrari's had round tail lights and classy understated looks compared to the "other" cars. The TR is all slotted and brash.

    My 355 was a great car were it not for the pesky CEL. So making a long story short I traded to enjoy a V12 before moving on to a more modern 360 or even a Gallardo. I had no real intentions of keeping this car, just a "good investment" for a passing fancy.

    But I was surprised in many ways. (1) the TR lines are much, much better in person than in any picture. (2) The build quality of the TR is well beyond that of the newer (and well liked) 355. (3) The sound! The 355 sounds awesome OUTSIDE the car. Inside, it is a bit airy, hollow... just not as impressive. My 512 is much quieter to those outside, but OHH!! the noise in the cabin is unbelieveable!! And (4) Torque!

    I have driven the Gallardo, and it just doesn't do it for me. But I recently drove what to me would be the ultimate 360: Yellow/black, Carbon seats, real 6-speed, Tubi, carbon intake, perfect. The view from the mirror, the feel of the seats... Oh no... here goes my wallet!

    Nope. The sound... just like the 355. Muted, airy, hollow. Where is the steering effort? and WHERE IS THE TORQUE????

    No, this series (512, TR, 512TR) is the pinnacle of driving. Just enough go. All the right sounds. No electronic nannies. Comfortable. Well made. Gorgeous.

    Tell me... how does it get any better??? What more could you possibly want???

    Glad to hear it from an experience driver of different cars... The look of the TR got me hooked at first then everything else... great car. I see that the 550 price came down and meet equally with the 512TR now... That should proof something about the TR. ....     I feel the same. I cannot envisage changing the TR for anything. It has the right feel in every Ferrari department: looks, comfort, sound, speed, practicality.

    The dealership from which I acquired my three cars in turn, (Mondial, Testarossa and now the TR) think that I should progress, eventually, to a 550 or 575 because I use the car for long-distance driving and touring. I can see advantages in the 550 or 575, modern and comfortable. but they do not stir me the same way.

    If I ever have to eat my words, I shall do my mea culpa on F-Chat. But I hope it's in my dotage.

    I admire so many Ferraris, especially the 300 series in all its varieties (308 and all the models until the 360) that I would be happy to own any of them.

    But not as happy as with the TR.

    57 chevy had the big fins...looked dated 10 years later...

    Roadrunner had a huge oversized tail...looked stupid 10 years later...

    Cobra was impractical, no top, huge side silencers/muffler, looked like a kit car 10 year later...

    Lamborghini Countach looked extremely dated...impractical...lousy AC...kit car quality...raped by all the magazines 10 years later...

    Hemicuda was considered impractical...gas guzzler...waste of money...drove like a truck....The last gasp of the muscle car era...10 year later....

    Duesenbergs were considered flaunting ones wealth...locomotives on wheels...people parked them in garages for decades, in the post war years...

    Mercedes gullwing....totally impractical doors. You could get it with sedan style doors...why would you want gullwing doors??? 10 years or so later they stopped making the doors...

    McLaren...you sit in the middle...unstable at speed...who the hell would want one? No other manufacturers made the middle seating position...

    A Dino?! Its a fiat for gods sake. The lowest end of the totem pole for those who couldn't afford a real ferrari...

    288 GTO...totally unreliable...a turbo has no place on a ferrari... I believe that most of the magazine evaluators ended up calling tow trucks to get them home...who the heck would want that?

    So...lets relate to the testarossa...

    Huge side strakes...who the hell would like that???

    Wide rear end, with impractical 12 cylinder getting 12 MPG...ludicrous...

    THE EPITOMY of 80's styling excess...morons...

    Single lug wheels...no other manufacturers jumped on board...


    Yep...the testarossa is a lost cause...who the hell will want one in the future???


    It hurts to be on the bleeding edge of design and style...until 30 years later when everyone recognizes its greatness :).

    Well said.... a loved car is like a loved one, it takes time to get to know and use to and to earn trust before realizing its values... However, in the case of the TR, it clicked me since my first sight....
