I was driving around Miami, and saw a Delorean with its two front tires deflated sitting at a gas station. The license plate expired in 1990!!!!! This kind of find is exciting to me... So naturally, I thought about buying it, and fixing it, and selling it, and making some cash.

I've heard that the wiring in those cars is horrible. I've also heard they sell for $10-25k. If I could buy it for $500, spend $4k on the engine, and $4k on the wiring, and $2k on "everything else" then tell me why this is a bad investment.

I've already done the obligatory search through the archives, but either I didn't go back enough, or I just don't know how to search.

    Thanks for your help!

Go to this Delorean community and read up.

Slow cars, bunches of unobtanium parts, but a pretty vibrant support system for them via mailing lists and such.

Most Deloreans I've seen havn't sold anywhere near 15k. I might be mistaken but I think you can get one for under 10k. Now if you can get it for a few hundred it might be a fun project. I'm sure you could find parts on ebay and such for a fair price. If you are not looking for a concourse car, it would be pretty easy to substitute many GM such as altenators and other misc items. There was one painted red that I've seen in Coronado on occasion. Actually looked much better with some color.

  5. I rode around in one back in the late 80's. They are really slow. It didn't seem to handle bad though. It got plenty of attention, I think the engine is a Volvo V6. You can hot rod them up, I have seen one that was turbo charged. There was a red one in Louisville 15 years ago also. If you can get it for 500 or so, go for it.

You show me where I can find a nice C4 vette conv for under $4k, that doesn't require more than $4k in "fixing up" and I'll go for it!

I thought they had American V8 motors. If you find parts tough to find just set the timer to 1985 and charge up the flux capacitor. I think they are okay and the founder of the company is a character. There were quite a few cars at the Celebration car show last year. Maybe go this year and ask lots of questions before you buy the car you found.

Bottom line is that nobody wants a DeLorean. So as far as an investment goes............you may be able to find one fairly cheap, but you'd spend more money fixing it up than what someone would be willing to pay for it.

A guy here in Houston supposedly bought the NOS inventory from the plant in Irelane and is now selling refurished cars with the NOS. I have seen the place numerous times but have never stopped to check it out. You can also purchase kits to restore your Delorean. They even have a link to a company that will make the car in the the "Back to the Future" car, flux capacitor and all.

A C4 Vette would never handle well though without modification. Its more of a cruiser than a sportscar.

The C4 corvette for their time were one of the best handling cars out there. When the car first debuted in 1983 as an 84 model there were reports of the car pulling almost 1G. It was later found out that the car really was more around .85-.90 but still amazing considering the tires at the time.

Automatic entry as parade car every St. Patrick's Day????

They change the turn signals out to green lamps!

An early Pontiac GTO would actually be a better tribute to the man's career......better investment also.....IMO

I have a friend who owns one and has for about 10 years or so now. The wiring is not as bad as you have heard. You can still get parts for them as easy as you do for a fcar so don't listen to Tillman. In fact my friend is in the process of redoing the suspension and it was bought as a kit with all the parts through a Delorean supply company.
They were never intended to be a sportscar. It always makes me laugh when people refer to them as such. They were designed to be an executives car. They are not fast by any means when compared to today's standards although neither is a 328 or 308. If you like the car get it for yourself not for an investment. Out of all the years my friend has owned his he hasn't lost any money (except repairs) and could still sell it for what he bought it for.

Cars aren't investments. Start with that.

As for the Delorean specifically, hey, if you can get it for $500, go for it and have fun! You never know, you might make a buck or two, especially if you value your time at less than $1/hour. And if you think owning a Delorean would be cool (and it would be), why not?

Of course, you'll probably find out that you can't get it for $500. My experience is that most of these cars are sitting like that because the owner thinks it's some ridiculous price as-is, and won't part with it for less. But you won't know unless you ask.

To each his own. I don't have the money to "throw it away" on just enjoying a car. Currently, all of my investments also have engines, and can take me from point A to B. I would only buy this car if I thought I could turn a profit on it. Ok, maybe if it'll get me tons of action, then I guess I'd also consider it :)
