Hi, my next problem is the 'ignition on' power supply to e.g. the car radio. Despite the separate cords for permanent and 'ignition on' power supply, both cords are permanent power supplies. Same goes for the cigarette lighter socket.

That shouldn't be right? Otherwise I got a problem with the battery drainage. Any comments on this?

My 355 is the same way--definitely odd.

My car's in storage at the moment, so I can't visually check it, but according to the wiring diagram in the shop manual, there should be six wires at the factory connector to the radio, and only one of them is "hot" at all times, running through fuse #4. There is not a wire for "switched" power in the factory harness, according to the diagram. Of course it should be easy to run one.

355 too. I got a 348 and thought previous owner messed around with the wires, but apparently it's not there according to the wire diagram.

I'll run through mine and see what else can be done. I normally don't like to mess around with that. Any suggestions where I can run a cord from without too much trouble?

As to why the radio has power all the time:: Most radios have a clock, and you don't want to be resetting the clock every drive. So, power remains on at the radio, but at most, there is a signal from the key-switch to turn on the amplifiers,....

My F355 has a radio with a clock, I have to push the volume button to turn it off. The other way to look at it is that I have to push the button to turn it on. Since I never turn it on, It really does not mater.

You never turn it on cause you like the other sound better:). Car radios (also with a clock I suppose) mostly have an 'always hot' and 'ignition on' connection. This way the clock and memory or what ever is preserved and the main function shut on/off depending on your key turn position.

I like it that way. Start your engine -> radio on, shut the engine -> radio off. I got a parrot system too and it drains about 100mA when on and almost mothing when off. A battery of 70AH will be depleted half way in about two weeks. And it is very cold now, so it's even worse:(.

I checked the electrical diagram and I think the clove compartment light is the best bet. It's key controlled power (fuse 5) and near the car radio compartment.

    Anyway, thanks for the reply.

In my last 355 the radio was always on, had to manually turn it off after a drive. My current 355 the radio is controlled by the ignition switch.

    Odd.

I assume your current one is newer and that people were really complaining about it. I guess the Italians are not Germans;). Not that I am, but I got great experiences with older German sports car.

I cannot believe it is the wiring!!!! This is excellent news. I have been chasing battery drains it feels as if forever now.... The car will barely sit for more then 2 weeks with out a problem starting..

My understanding is that the ECU's have to be always powered or they will lose the memory and the car will run lean or rich, not good.

Until ferrari started putting the becker radios in the cars they were always wired constant and one problem that most people dont seem to understand is that when a ferrari has a sony radio in it (factory) the sony radio is made so that is doesn't have an excessive drain when it is turned off. When you take out the sony and install a new radio alpine/ kenwood or whatever the new radio's accessory wire has to be wired to a switched power, otherwise there will be an excessive drain between 50 and 150 milliamps. Depending on the model of ferrari there are many alternatives for a switched power... key buzzer / back of ignition switch / glove box light...

Weird, but both are newer than mine;).

Yeah, me too. I used two cameras in video mode; one on a digital current meter between the battery, one handheld to recording the 'fuse pull' action. Afterwards, time stamp of the first video of current drop gives the responsible fuse on the other. Took me 10min. Or you just walk back and forth after each fuse, or get a buddy:). Appears the parrot was responsible for 60%, so now it takes more than a month to drain the battery half way. According to calculation, that is. But there are still other sources I got to figure out.

Yeah, I read something about that too. When battery is pulled or drained, the next time you connect the battery you have to let the engine idling till it is warm(ECU learning phase). Some say you may not touch the acceleration pedal in the meanwhile.

Key buzzer? Not sure I got one. The clove compartment purple wire is the best I guess. Easily accessible from the fuse box and therefore near the radio console. I got a Sony, but it was my parrot system that draws a lot. Still, I prefer that the radio goes on when I start the engine and off when the engine does. Don't like extra button pushes ever time.

For the guys who want to do the mod as well. It's the pink wire instead of purple (my bad, language glitch I guess). It's the third wire on connector "C" on the back of the footrest fuse box. Just did the mod and it works beautifully. My Sony car radio even beeps (front removal reminder) after switching off as it should do:).
