I was under the impression that the Spider had 320HP? Huh.

    Modern interior?

The other improvements are neither here nor there.

Thank God! The Testarossa didn't exactly age gracefully.

Plus, people throw tomatoes at you unless you wear the Crocket outfit when you drive it.

312bhp for US market after 93 while Euro got 320 due to different exhaust.

But not all were satisfied with the 348. Its styling was considered bland at best, with some comparing its wedge–shaped design to that of a Toyota MR2 fitted with big tires and a horse on the nose

Also, the 348 had more than its share of growing pains, including a weak gearbox in the early cars that had a tendency to self–destruct. Three major gearbox updates were offered in an effort to resolve the various problems. In addition, the 348 flywheel is made of 30 different parts, including springs and washers, with the assembly packed in grease, in an attempt to dampen the harmonic vibrations of the engine. As you can imagine, it’s a nightmare (or perhaps a flat–rate mechanic’s dream) to disassemble as part of a resurfacing during a clutch replacement. With a new flywheel priced at $3,200, the double–disc clutch priced at $1,800, a throwout bearing priced at $600 and $450 for labor, a clutch replacement on a 348 can quickly become a very expensive venture.

Additionally, the electronics on the early systems were a hornet’s nest of defective ECUs, failure–prone $1,400 alternators and recalcitrant starters. Due to their overtaxed alternators, 348s should only be started with fully charged batteries. The puny alternator will often fry itself as it attempts to charge a low battery. For those who don’t want to pay Ferrari $1,400 for a new alternator, a rebuild is a more modest $250. Furthermore, the early Bosch Motronic 2.5 engine management system was troublesome, whereas the later Motronic 2.7 version offered better performance and improved engine management.

While the basic engine is relatively bulletproof, the 348 is the only Ferrari to feature a single serpentine timing belt for all four camshafts, causing rapid wear that can result in belt failure and very expensive valve–train damage. The long single–cam timing belt makes degreeing the cams, part of the major engine service, a nightmarishly onerous event, as any adjustment affects everything else connected to it. Adding to the complications, a 30,000–mile major service requires the engine to be removed from the car, not an inexpensive operation. Figure $5,000 for the “engine out&$8221; major service.

The F355’s cockpit was designed for maximizing driving pleasure. In the usual Ferrari tradition, the perfect driving position was obtained with an electric fully-adjustable driver’s seat and height-adjustable steering wheel. The comfort was insured by sports-seats covered in Connolly leather that could be replaced as an option by race-like composite bucket seats. Also, the lever for the manual gear-box was positioned on the console for optimum handling.
The car featured standard environmental-friendly climate control.

Connolly leather in 355 holds up better as does the dash, gauges look more modern, seats better support, gorgous looks. 1800 hours of wind tunnel testing in the design of F355. The Testarossa is the most recognized Ferrari outthere "freeze Miami Vice :) wow. F355 lapped 2 seconds faster around the track compared to 512TR though Testarossa commands looks more than most Fcars.

Let me make one thing crystal clear. I never park outside Starbucks at 11, we're there at 8:00 AM.

And another thing, Tiburons look like s 3/4 scale 360, not the other way around. Actually a 360 looks like a 246GT on steroids.

Oh, and.. well... um.. 355's suck. Except for that exhaust note, which is really sweet.

But my dad's 360 can kick your dad's 355's ass, any day of the week, and twice on Saturday, at the Starbucks.

Actually, the dealer TOLD me to buy a 360, said I'd have nothing but trouble with a 355. :D

Ok, I'm done stirring the pot now.

I beg to differ on the stability. The 355 is a POS in this arena. Front end floats above 150.

My Lotus was light years ahead on top speed and even my Maserati is better. VERY weak area. Needs a splitter............(Dan has been trying to get me one)

    Other than that it rocks!

Yeah, and a new Z06 can beat both of us... big deal! When both cars are viewed in Ferrari history, one day critics will agree that the overall appeal of the 355 is superior to the 360. Also, if a car dealer tells you to buy one car over another, does that make him right? Answer.... no, that just mean he wants to move a particular car. If truth be told, there are alot more 360's for sale than 355's.

    Keeping the pot stirred.

    I don't have a (female organ).......When I'm "told" what a performance car can do, I find out :) ;)

Sure a Vette can beat all Ferrari's mentioned, it depreciates faster than anything I know........The "flexible flyer" is the king in that arena.......

I personally love the 355 for more than just it's top end.............That's why I have two........

When I get my lower air dam my high speed float will be fixed.......Simple aerodynamics...........Of course when air isn't going the right way I "naturally" get bent out of shape:)

same old noise: real world torque at low rpm is better on the 348
steering feel is vastly superior on the 348 when setup properly
these cars aren't about 0-60, leave that to the Z6 and sport bikes - who "launches" and speedshifts their cars, no one!
tighter suspension is debatable - a bunch of hydraulic and obsolete ecu's everywhere in them 355's
lighter by FNA #'s or by a scale - I'm doubting it (at least for the spiders) - hydraulics and electrics everywhere vs none?
aerodynamic stability is solved with the spacers on the 348tb/ts and inherently fixed in the spider and GTB/GTS/Challenge
modern vs classic interior - the modern voters can go join the Civic crowd.

3550's do shift better than 348's

both look better than a 360 and are sized better, but I'd rather not drive so many obsolete 355 computers - thanks very much! :D:D

Look every one knows that the 355 was updated to suit the more (how do you say) normal public, the ones that need the extra pampering and refinements like power tops and power steering as such, that being said it is like listening to two separate female performers, one raw..., one refined...:p

You figure out which one is 348 and which one 355>>>:D:D:D

I guess i'll never understand this foolishness. I love both of these cars, I dont like the 360 or 430.. they're just too damn big and quiet to be called sports cars. I'll never understand how a 355 owner can bash a 348 based on asthetics, they're the same car!! They have the same overall dimensions and form... just a couple panels were changed and the rear lip was changed... big deal! The interiors are virtually the same, except for the center console and door panels.
Both cars have notorious problems, several of them are consistant in both cars, ALL of which are obscenely expensive to resolve.

One of the legthly posts earlier mentioned something about an adjustable steering column added to the 355... my 348 has that too! It also mentioned about the 355 having power seats... only the spider has those, and its only for forward and back motion, and the only reason they did that was to prevent chicks and rich dummies from destroying the top mechanisms by forgetting to move the seats forward! And the power seats are just ANOTHER pooly engineered electrical system in the 355 that is prone to failure and outrageous repair cost.
As far as power steering, thats a matter of taste, I personally enjoy the manual steering, and I dont have another "system" waiting to fail and cost me $1000's to repair... either way, both cars STILL have the turning radius of a 45' motorhome!
The 355 motor problems are no easier on the wallet than the 348 gearbox problems, the advantage is that the 348 gearbox explosion can often be avoided by properly addressing the known causes, the 355 motor problems are virtually unavoidable. So the 348 dual disc clutch costs a couple hundred more than the 355 single plate clutch... have you seen what it costs to replace a bad F1 pump??

Speaking of notorious 355 problems, I have a good working 355 spider seat potentiometer available for sale if anyone wants... PM me! ;)

I guess I was lucky to own a 1994 348 then!!! I had no idea early cars had issues.

Not sure what "tradition" called for power seats, though...

As for the Vette/NSX/Lancer Evo/GTR beating a Ferrari - I have a friend with a 1991 Nissan that can beat all the above. Looks like a used butt plug, though!!! Long live Ferrari!!!

You are aware 348's are prone to the same valve issues in addition to transmission woes late models included. BTW about 20% of the 95 355's have had the valve issues and being OBD1 free from most emission control glitches of 96+ cars. Manual seats invite operator error/damage IMO:)

10-15k over 348 for all the aformentioned technological advancements/goodies seems fair now after depreciation.
