    He's the most famous coffee picker in the world (I know cuz I saw it on TV), and Man, coffee picking is time consuming work! So much pickin for just a few precious beans! Sheesh-now I gotta squeeze the beans out, dunk them in water overnight, wash the slime off tomorrow, dry them, then roast (toast) them while turning to prevent charring, then grind. Planted the seed 6 years ago. tree is 7' high now......

    Last December I spent a few weeks in Santa Cruz de Leon Costa Rica, and stayed with a family that were friends with my nephew. I spent a good amount of time working in their coffee bean fields (which are on the sides of mountains and valleys). It was the off season so pulling only the ripe (red) beans was tough, and very time consuming. I was told "in" season you can slide your hand down a branch and pull all the beans off at once. It was a very enjoyable experience, and I have to say the coffee that fresh was incredible...never had better. It was sweetened with unrefined cane sugar too.

    Wow, cool story. Thanks for sharing your experience. That sounds really wonderful! I will try to find coffee that fresh when traveling in areas that grow coffee beans.

    Wow, falcon, amazing pictures. What a place. Yes, best beans are in mountains, hard to get to, hard to harvest, and forget about mass assembly line mentality here. I joked about Juan Valdez, but thats still how many of the best suppliers pick their crop. Paths that wind/turn around precarious ridges/cliffs, to get to the trees, etc. Only donkeys can access some of them.

    Oh- its cool to "strip" so many beans at once, like you said, but you will get beans that are not at optimum ripeness (as you can see by the varied colors of beans in your basket). Only red ones must be picked. Like Juan Valdez.

    Oh- Florida is actually too COLD for coffee. Thats why is so unusual to get a harvest where I live. Lots of care/guarding from our "cold" Florida winter nights. Anybody can grow coffee in S America.......

    During the time of year we were picking, I was told it was acceptable to have a large number of green because the come off the same time you pick the red and there was no sense having them go to waste, which seemed reasonable.
    Here are a few more shots. One of the mountain side bean field, one of my nephew and his friend that hosted us, and one of mostly unripened beans.
    Santa Cruz De Leon was an amazing place with wonderful people. You could pick fresh fruit that was growing wild EVERYWHERE, the O2 levels were amazing compared to what I am used to in Colorado...I never got out of breath on the hikes I did, and the national beer Imperial was about $.50 a bottle!

    Thanks, Falc, for the other pictures. Wow, what a crop down there. Do they have poisonous snakes lurking in those jungles that you know of? I imagine one has to be very careful where one steps.

    Yes, it is acceptable, I understand, to pick all at once and to have "green" mixed in, iF you wish to be quick/easy. Then, though, no way to avoid having less ripe beans in the mix, thats all there is to it. In Brazil, with the huge coffee farms, they pick with machines, and pick everything, ripe/green/some brown/dead beans, etc. You get what you pay for. Masss production in Brazil.

    Of course, they try to time it to maximize the ripe ones in the pick.
