Seriously? I dont even care about writing to the discs yet (although that would be a great storage plan). Like most college students, I would have assumed, my PC is my media center. It is the center for homework, music, gaming, internet resources, and movies. Damn it, I want to be able to watch HD-DVD's on my PC.

get the xbox HD-DVD player and it hooks up through USB, you can plug it up to your computer, and it looks great

Toshiba SD-H802A. Internal HD-DVD drive. Its the same drive that they use in the XBOX HD-DVD player. You can also just go buy the XBOX HD-DVD drive and plug it in by USB. You need to download and install UDF 2.5 drivers and you'll need a speedy computer and vid card to be able to keep up with the data stream, but if you have that it works fine.

but for a price. my wife just got a new laptop with HD-DVD. Have also priced out a few desktops with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray options.

The whole thing's kinda VHS vs Beta at the moment, likely before you were born but was ugly if you picked wrong.

I'm very familular with the situation. I was a big pronent of Sony's MD walkmen and MD tech. I bought BIG into DIVX players when they came out. lmao. Now I have 300+ unusable DIVX discs.

IMHO, sony has tried and failed to monopolize a format forever (MD or Sony's Camera Memory sticks). This one is just silly though (blu-ray vs. HD-DVD) We all know how it is going to turn out. Sony has been fighting for the past 2 years for this one too.

I think Sony would be smarter to invest in developing lasting OLED TV's before Samsung. Time to give up on this one.
