Many on the F-Chat were hoping that the 458 spider would retain the rear glass showcasing the engine.

Here is a photo of the top as it is beeing folded away. You can see that it resides in a special compartment which probably serves as a heat sheild.

Herein lies the problem, as even if you could make everything out of glass, when folded away the two panels and the compartment panel separating it from the engine compartment would be overlapping so much that any view of the engine bay would be very poor.

You can't even show off the engine if you lift the engine cover!

It's going to be a pain to work on.

Oh well... some sacrifices have to be made in the interest of progress.

The heat shield seems to pop out pretty easily. But, you have to have the top cover up. To remove the plenum, it looks like you have to remove the mechanism. I bet you can get to the plugs not much differently than the coupe.

Now you know why they have a new 7 year free maintenance program! No one could afford the service! :)

Well, it's pretty much impossible to work on it even if it had perfect access due to all the diagnostic computers you need.

Slightly OT.....One thing I noticed yesterday is that the roof mechanism (or the storage area for the roof) eats up a lot of space behind the rear seats. The tailored bags are tiny and a snug fit. The seat backs are almost touching the bulkhead at its highest point.

Well said , at least they could have made that rear latch with the grilles clear so at least people see half of the engine ...lol , i just hope that more people that are in the 458 market buy the coupe( fabulous looking)and not the spider but i am afraid that it is not going to happend

As been posted on F-chat before, the glass display for the engine was a great, novel idea that orginated with the 360 and has now been copied by other sports car companies. Its almost old hat now and 458 spider has such a great coupe to spider transition that losing the display is a very small price to pay.

I saw a video of the top folding into place at my dealer today and it's very well engineered.
It is too bad the glass cover is gone. I love all the coupes but I have been a convertible guy since I was a teenager. To me there is nothing like an open top Ferrari. Especially if you live in a good climate allowing for regular use.
I have a coupe at the moment but really miss my 430S.The wait will be tough but I will own this latest marvel when I eventually move into position on "the list".

now THAT'S the pic i've been wanting to see! i was never sure if there was a 'liner' to keep engine heat from baking the roof panels when stowed. so now we know for sure:)

Made me laugh when GM put the plexi window on the ZR-1 only to finish it with a tacky engine cover.

The car is soooooooooo nice I saw it today at the IAA.really great.with that option of the roof you will not order a coupe anymore.the sihloute of the car is incredible.it remember a lot to a CGT from the side but more better and nicer. It's clousing and opening that fast.
everybody who ordered the ITALIA SPIDER will be impressed.perfect

One thing I hate about the Lambo G Spyder is that it does not have a glass engine cover. I always loved that about the F430's. It's a crying shame the 458 Spyder does not have this.

I for one am pleased the rear glass window is eliminated on the spider.I never could get that window clean on the 430,458 and scud (lexan) I hope to have the spider next spring.

So----------------------THATS-------- were you warm up your burrito’s and tacos!

This is where Ferrari droped the ball. How can you not show off that engine?

Ferrari made an 300k oven instead. Those slates or gill's on the cover seems like an after thought. Sort of gallardo--ish.

The 458 is not a small sports car. At least in the coupe ferrari breaks up all that exterior color with the visable engine to look at. Now the color (which favorite color seems to be red) never stops, there is no visual stopping point. I might as well be driving my Viking oven range.

The 430 spyder is still the best convertible.

And furthermore, We are going to buy it becuase Ferrari told us to.

    Just an observation :)

Agreed. I am actually sick of the clear engine display on the spiders. I still love it on the coupes but on convertible I never thought it was that great.
