This Is Texas :: Texas Monthly

"A great capital city, most everyone would agree, should be representative of the state or nation over which it presides. It should be preeminent not only in size but also in learning, power, and wealth. You might say a capital should be a state or nation’s one indispensable city, the sort of hub that back in the Cold War days was on the short list of places the Russkies would nuke if they had only a few warheads to toss our way.
In Texas, that city is not Austin.
No, the rightful standard-bearer of our state—the city with the greatest number of people, of cultural happenings, of medical facilities, of gangbust.....................

Thought this kind of funny "He named his new city Austin, after Stephen F., who, though he has gone into history books with the rather grand title of “impresario,” was in reality little more than a glorified real estate developer."

Fortunately for proponents of Houston, the author made no mention of character.

    Texas!
A long time ago, in another place, far far away, I used to work for one of the major accounting firms in Houston. One day I as I was looking out the window at all the smog and traffic a partner came up to me, put his arm around me, and said, "Ah, don't ya just love it? Don't ya just love the smell of money?"

This is the difference between Houston and Dallas. Dallas has pretentious of grandeur. You know, women who were born to shop. Men who give money to the symphony, even when they'd rather hear some ZZ Top.

Houston, on the other hand. We don't give a **** who yo daddy was, or even if you had a daddy. Can you do what you say you can do? That's all that counts.

What you smokin' Jack? We have people from every corner of the world here now. So many beautiful Latina's all over the place(my weakness), along with people from every other nation.

I think those who knock it only come here for a day or two on business and dont see all the different sides of this city.

Houston in reality is multiple cities in one. You have the med center(where you buy your wife boobies), Down town Houston(where you make your money), Galleria Area(where you let your wife shop/party, and or where you meet you side GF), North Side/ Woodlands(where you raise your kids) which is growing super fast, Clear lake(where you keep your yacht you made from petro dollars lol), and if Galveston will ever get its crap together well have some awesome gambling/casinos soon.

All that said I love Austin too. Ill just make my money in Houston though and buy a weekend place of my choice in Austin soon.

Houston is for making money at the end of the day, and nothing wrong with that. Its why its one of the few places that felt really no pain from the "great recession" or whatever the hell Wankees decided to call it.

You know nothing of Fort Worth, there is much more than downtown & the stockyards. I've heard people call it boring before, I prefer to say it's just more laid back. Plenty of things to do when you know where they are.

As for Houston I was born there, lived seven years of my life that I'll never get back. The city is flat & smells horrible. Tried to find some weekend getaways & often found my self in Kemah / Clearlake area or a road trip somewhere west of Houston.

I thought about moving to Austin last year, but the housing prices are insane & traffic changed my mind. Quite a few friends of mine that have lived there for more than a decade are moving back to the Panther City. Hollywood types seem to be ruining it with also the massive influx of Californians from what my cousin thinks & a shop owner on 6th street told me.

If I may we could put another twist on which city should be the capital of Texas although frankly I could care less, barring the Battle of San Jacinto.

My father is named after one of our familys decendants, the son of William Barret Travis so San Antonio could actually be determined as the righteous capital of Texas.

Texas is a state of mind.

    Are you running for office?

My in-laws moved to the Woodlands several years ago and I'm in Houston for business a few times a year. Too much flatness, concrete, traffic, and humidity for my liking. Too damn big. That being said, I do appreciate the general down to earth mentality of the city and there are definitely many great restaurants.

I'm ok with Houston, its just about yanking chains. Much happier being in Austin though.

lol. Thats the other thing I love about this place, lots of passion.

Hey I love Austin with all my heart. Lots of good memories there going to school and soon Ill have a place out on the lake.

Make your money in Houston and then choose any where in the world youd like. Im picking Houston and Austin though for my resting places. The world is great for two week vacations here and there but Texas is where I choose to stay....

If all state capitals were chosen based solely on population [and the other criteria the author mentioned] Chicago would be the capital of Illinois [afterall half of the entire state's population lives in Chicagoland!], New York City would be the capital of New York, Los Angeles would be the capital of California....

It's good for politicians to see more of the state they are supposed to represent and serve.

As an austinite, I can say I probably speak for the majority when I say.....

You can have the capitol. We don't really need it or want it(politicians aside). That said, you can have about the last 800000 people that moved to Austin over the last 20 years too :)

Justin - hangin' his hat in Austin for 20+ years.
