    Why do teams do this, if they can just communicate with the driver by the radio. Plus, how can the drivers even see the, damn, pit board at those speeds coming down the pit straight?

    It's a backup system in case radio comm fails. Also hearing details like lap times etc is hard over the radio with the engine going etc. Reading pit boards on a long straight with not much else to do is not that difficult.

    Actually I wish the video games would make more use of pit boards as they are a lot easier to read than trying to read something off the LCD on your steering wheel, which is also not very realistic. GPL uses pitboards though.

    You can also push a mute button is your ears are being talked off. So I guess it's a good thing. It's a classic touch anyway, even if they aren't helpful to the drivers, it is such a good thing to see. Es. when it says "PUSH!"

    I would think it could be very interesting if F1 banned radios and the drivers had to use pit boards. There could be ten monitors (one per team) which would listen to all driver/pit radios.

    The radios would still be used during practice and could be used during the race for safety purposes like alerting the driver to a crash ahead or a blue flag situation. It could also be used to alert the driver of a problem with the car ("your front right tire is going down") but would carry some sort of penalty if used. Maybe a stop & go, but it could be waived if the driver came in for a full pitstop within 3 laps.

    If all strategy was banned from the radios, the radio feed from all teams could be carried live on the TV broadcast.

    I think banning radios is dangerous from a safety standpoint. I wish they had open radio transmissions through the race so we catch what's going on. Right now we get the transmission after the final lap only...

    Pit boards used as back up as well as AUDIBLE.
    Pit Boards can be used to;
    change strategies...
    alter strategies...
    suggest in car set up mods...
    confuse the monitors...
