Why does the right hand side of my muffler box tarnish whilst the left side stays nice and shiny silver........I've polished the tarnishing off but it always comes back but only on the right side.......????????/

It's hard to avoid this heat discoloration, esp. in the polished finishes.

It happens on bikes and in marine racing engines, as well.........maybe someone will come up with a good answer......

My ANSA systems come painted flat black, and even that goes south over time...these things run hot, man!

I understand the physics of that but why discolouration on one side only...?

Maybe the difference in thermodynamics between the left and the right is that the right side has far greater heat transfer than the left. The best way to tell is to use a pyrometer to see the different temp. for each side.

Right pipe comes from the rear bank, , much shorter pipe,
    thus hotter...

It's because you drive on the wrong side of the road ! Here (across the pond) the mufflers tarnish on the OTHER side ;)

Just kidding. Check and you will see a difference in temps, especially while warming up.

    Regards,

    Stew

I've been noticing my right side exhaust tips running hotter (IR gun), and that would contribute to tarnishing. Not sure why though, my manifold heat shields seem to be the same. As mentioned above must be heat transfer along the way (I have a 355, OEM ex manifolds and cats, Tubi exhaust)
