OK, understand that the reserve driver at Virgin isn't major news for most F1 fans, but it's pretty cool for Canadians who haven't had a driver in F1 since Jacques Villeneuve. Considering the performances to date of the current drivers, Glock and D'Ambrosio, there's a reasonably decent chance he'll get into a race this season.

I've been following Wickens' results for a few seasons now but still haven't had the opportunity to actually see him race. He's currently second in the Renault World Series, a point out of the lead.

I hope this isn't the 'kiss of death' for the poor chap.

Reserve driver in such a team sounds like a blind alley to me.

Maybe, but couple of faster lap times than the regulars during practice a la Robert somebody at Sauber a few years ago and....who knows. ;)

Better than a seat at Your Name Here...

Ask de Grassi or Bruno Senna if a year at the back of the grid improved their career.

I also couldn't understand why ex-Force India Luizi signed for HRT this year.
Better try for a competitive drive in GP2, I think.

I don't know about that one, a trip to the minor leagues has a certain taint. At least if you're in the show, who knows, maybe one of the minnows may have a budding Newey in its ranks and suddenly a star is born...(thinking Toleman among many) ;)

Also ask Fernando what year it was...and if testing was allowed at that time.

Minardi was certainly better than HRT is.

    +1

    They only get a very brief opportunity to impress;

    1. Beat your teammate(s).
    2. Do not crash.

He may still be toddling around at the back, but *if* he can beat the other two guys, preferably 3-4 times, he'll be hailed as the next Seb and the howls will start that he should be in red....... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Maybe, but not in any meaningful way, Minardi was still terrible. Anyway, it doesn't matter, it isn't about winning points, it will be about comprehensively dominating a teammate in the same machinery. That's all he needs to do to be noticed by other teams.

Exactly. Some drivers land in a top car from a junior series (like Hamilton, Villeneuve), but most don't. Vettel didn't, Massa didn't, Alonso didn't, Senna didn't, Schumacher didn't, Raikkonnen didn't. The list of "didn'ts" is a long one.

Congrats to Robert Wickens who won the Renault World Series 3.5. The man he beat for the championship, his teammate Jean-Eric Vergne, drove in the first practice session in Korea today for Toro Rosso replacing Alguersuari for the session. Vergne will get two more practice sessions this season. Hopefully Wickens will get a chance to drive in a practice session in one of the three remaining races after this weekend.

Congratulations to him! Would be nice to see a Canadian back in the game.

I wonder why they've given the Friday test job to the other guy? I guess he's bringing $?

    Cheers,
    Ian
