Any chatter experienced a simple "click" from the engine bay when trying to restart the car after refuelling at a service station? It was after a 1 hour drive in my '84 308 and the only thing i could get was a click but no starting motor , The battery seemed OK but as it cooled down (1/2 hour later) it started without hesitation, Any similar experience? A craked solenoid? Loose wire? Why does it get better when cool? Thanks for any suggestion.

First clean battery terminals and make sure they are tight. Then check the connections at the starter solenoid. Clean them and make sure they are tight. Check the ground too. If you still have a problem it could be the starter getting heat soaked.

Had the same problem in the Dino.

Probably the starter getting ready to go on vacation, in a permanent kind of way.

Sometimes tapping, NOT TOO HARD, on the starter or solenoid will help if it's stuck, but of course you probably can't get to it without the car being on a lift. So that's out.

I've bumped the starter by nudging the car while in gear, risky but effective when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere and the car won't crank.

And last but not least, I don't know if the 308 starter is as cranky as the Dino, but we spent considerable time shimming it to properly align the starter and flywheel.

but, first post is right, start with ALL the electrical connections. Get the battery checked too.

A common problem with old/hot starters are that the armature will contact the field windings and the amperage draw goes off the chart. After the starter cools it breaks the physical contact and will run. You can check the amperage draw by laying an inductive gauge on the positive cable and turn the key. Lost
