Agreed not the same thing any more by many measures.

To play on the e-type or aircooled porche theme, whether they made 1000 or 1 million those cars essemntialy retained what they were. the volume affetcs collector value but either way those cars were so good that they are still kept and driven today hence their durable pricing.

Ferrari though starting with the 360 went in a very different direction to before. They went to make their cars useable with increasing on paper eprformance. A lot was lost in the process and with each genration. Its true other manufactuers did the same thing, but those manufactuerers were not ferrari which sold cars based on what made them so special.

More techno speed, BMW discovered that its not a winning formula for the M4.

to me ferrari has (variably) kept styling and engine sound, most of the other viceral attributes are gone, althougfh luxury and relaibility have increased.

Given the current performance avaiable in the market from vipers to evttes to even NSX's not to mention camaros and porche, the performance delta to ferrari is negligable. Think back, what in period came close to daytona, very little. I would argue that chasing more paper numbers and blanding out the whole experince in the name of useability/comfort is a diminishign to negative return. Even Mclaren sees this where arguably the 570 is a superior and more relevant drive to a720

While paper numbers may impress some, its also clear that more paper speed is a dimimnishing return to irrelevancy, especialy as it comes with more weight which is the enemy of "real" performance.

I think we would agree that ferrari would do well to imbue their cars with some of the more viceral characteristics from the past.

Maybe ferrari should just come out with a line of NA motors, stick and non ps on an existing platform, something to sell to the faithfull. then the 488 or whatever techno wonder would still be faster for that drive to the valet parking crowd.

Ducati sells plenty of monsters and hypermotards.
