Ferrari's arch-enemy, McLaren, is bringing out the P11. This car is designed by no-less than the former Ferrari design-chief Frank Stephenson. It's rumored to have a curb weight of 2645 pounds.

There are others coming too. Will the 458 Italia be best in class?

If that's what the the new McLaren looks like, we at least know the 458 looks better ;)

Well hp and fuel consumption-wise it does best the LP560. That dual clutch transmission's great too. We'll have to see, although I do hope Ferrari's deigned to grace us with satnav and backup camera for those who drive it around a city. Front life wouldn't hurt either.

I highly doubt that's what the P11 will look like. McLarent wouldn't let that happen, imo.

The 458 will be the best in class, upon its introduction. It will eventually be superceded in performance by its rivals (like the MacLaren). It's only natural - time brings improvements. Try comparing a 308 to a 358 - things change quickly, no? ;)

But of course, raw numbers do not tell the whole story. How the 358 feels to drive will be more important than its raw performance specs to some. In fact, some may find the 308 the more visceral experience and still more than fast enough for the majority of streets in this country.

If the MacLarn really weighs in the neighborhood of 2,600 lbs, that may give it a huge advantage. The only area where I had hoped for more from the 458 is in the area of weight savings (I thought it might become a tad smaller too which would make it feel more nimble).

Does it really matter guys? I mean what more do some people want. 0-62 in 3.5 seconds 203 mph? The only question in my mind is will the P11 be more fun to actually drive than the 458. Ferrari are fun to drive & for years Lamborghini has been building cars with more HP, but they are no where as near as fun to drive as the Ferrar in its class.

I know those are only renderings of the new McLaren, but if thats any indicator, the 458 will atleast crush it in that department.
The 458 was the first new car in a long time that made me go "I WANT ONE!!!".

If thats it then no problem... That being said, how many times have we heard about pictures being "pretty accurate" before the car is released...

WADR, the Diablo 6.0 was much more of a driver's car and more fun to drive then the 550/75, the latter being more a comfortable GT by comparison.

Benz SLS is close but slower and chaper. As far as I know no news on new gen Gallardo. Thus, the Italia is the new queen of the class.
If you have seen the acceleration video - you know what I am talking about. The acceleration sounds and look absolutely surreal. Trick diff and traction control plus the double clutch gearbox are putting this entry level model in Enzo territory.
And how they managed to squeeze 570Nm out of naturaly aspirated 4.4 liter engine I really dont know

Car magazine has been touting that this is the shape of the Mclaren for a while and some of the camo pics of the test mule seem to support this. Key question for this car and how it compares to the 458 is what engine it is going to use. Obvious choice would be the 6.2 AMG unit from Merc but that may put it close to Merc AMG's own SLS?
