Will these wheels fit?

Hi Guys,

Will these wheels work on the Dino? There's no mention of backspacing. It only says 308 GTSi. Did the 308 GTSi change wheel specs during it's production? I'm interested in these for my Dino.

please don't put these on your dino. buy the 16" wheels that are available

 

BBS wheels on a 246??? for real?? If you have the original Campi wheels leave it alone. No need to moderinze a true classic F-car.

 

I appreciate your opinion on the looks gentlemen. There's a local red Dino on blacked out Weds (similar design to BBS) that looks fantastic. And there is an image I have at home of a burgundy Dino with BBS that just rocks. I'm interested but not 100% sold. Just curious if they will fit.

If they fit under the arches & clear the calipers on a 308, they likely will be OK for a 246. Bolt pattern's the same for both. You might ask the seller for some specs &/or pics of the wheels mounted on a 308 before you bid, just to be sure. My '72 (Tipo E) 246 is currently running 7.5x14 'star' wheels off of a '79 308 GTS. Tires are non-standard 225/60 & 235/60 & are kinda wide, but work. The correct 205/70s would be better. I'm slowly restoring the Cromodoras & have a fresh set of XWXs & aluminum valve stems to complete 'The Look.' In the meantime, the 308 wheels seem to be a reasonable sub. 2GT runs the same wheels on one of his Dinos. Both of these 14" examples will give you a general idea of how a 7.5" 308 wheel fits under stock Dino arches. Factor in the info below for 16s.

John Corbani (Corbani's Corner) did an informative tutorial on 16" rims. If you recall, he's run 16x7 Gottis on his Dino for nearly 24 years & loves 'em.

I recall that you were involved in the discussion when dinodan was exploring the swap to the Superformance 16s. I'm sure you saw and read the results.

We all have our opinions; that's a good thing. Bottom Line: It's your car; if you like 'em & they fit...go for it. Those who have, rave about the improved handling of the 16s. A word of caution, though. Inspect your suspension, in general, and control arms, in particular, before you improve the 'bite.' Then, check periodically after the upgrade. The guys in the 308/328/Mondial Forum have experienced stress cracks in the control arms as a result of metal fatigue, thought to have been caused by increased traction. Most of the problems appeared on steet-driven cars.

The Dino is a beautiful design, but the first thing I see and think of when I see the picture of the red Dino is WRONG!!!!!. The tires look to big and they take away from the balance of the car. Like seeing kit cars whith wheels that don't fit properly.

 

As a sixties and seventies production vehicle, the Dino looks normal with higher-profile tires than are the norm today. I have long felt, however, that the Michelin XWX in size 205/70 VR 14 is both too tall and too narrow for the body design. Particularly with the standard wheels, there is too much gap between the tire/wheel combination and the wheel cutout. I have used 225/60 14s for many years and find them to be a nice compromise. My cars both have 7 1/2" wheels, which also contribute to a more balanced appearance, in my opinion. I also like the look of the 16s that some of you have on your Dinos. Fred

Another point iyou should think about s the driving behavour with different tyre sizes.
I tried 7&8 x16" from the 328 on my Dino and the response from steering is more direct due to / 50 or /55 tyre height.
But the comfort is nearly gone and I removed them later.
Before on my 205/70 VR 14 I can influencing a lot just by adjusting the air pressure.
My solution is also the use the 7,5 x 14 wheels from early 308 GT/GTS with 5 Stars design.
That design is was was allready on the Dino Berlinetta Prototype and fits best in my opinion.
With the 7,5 wheels the gap between wheels and fenders are nearly gone and I drive a original size like the campagnolos.
And I can still drive the 205/70 XWX tyres from the original wheels ;-)

 

As indicated above, I believe the 7.5" wheels with 225/60 14 tires to be a good compromise. As the last poster stated, the early-308-style five-spoke star wheels, similar to those on the second Dino prototype from 1966, complement the Dino body design. Clearances are very good, as well. An added benefit that I have noted, compared with the standard 246 wheels, is that they don't quickly become coated with brake dust, and when dirty, they are much easier to clean. I used to quietly curse all the little nooks and crannies on the standard wheels. The Campagnolos on my other Dino get dirty faster than the 308 wheels, and they are not a pleasure to clean, but the look they give to the car more than makes up for any unpleasantness in caring for them. When I bought the second Dino, it had 225/60 14 Pirelli P6 tires, and the first one had 205/70 14 Michelin XVS tires. The first car, parked in the garage next to the "new" one, looked as though it were on jack stands! Fred

Another thing that I like about the 308 wheels is the fact that the brake discs are quite visible, and fill the cutouts in the star pattern. Fred

 

velocetwo: Point well taken. The wheels came with 225/60s on two of 'em & 235/60s on the others. The T/A's aggressive tread & 'hot rod' image isn't a good fit on the Dino. Adding insult to injury, the 235s, though nearly the same height as the original 205/70s, are definitely too wide. I've attached the front view of the car that I omitted from that post; it presents a slightly more balanced perspective. Thanks for your candid observation.

Dino Club Germany: After seeing your 308 wheels shod with XWXs, I may have to break down & have mine broken down! No sense in having the Michelins languishing away in my garage. 'might as well enjoy them while they are young! Besides, my wife's not big on storing new parts. "Save the vintage pieces for posterity, but get their replacements on the car--so we can drive it!" Since I'm taking a lot longer than anticipated to get after the resto on the stock Cromodoras & hubcaps, I'll likely put that project on the back burner. It's almost show time & definitely is go time (betwixt brief rain storms) here in SoCal. As you suggested, fine-tuning the tire pressure will improve the 'dated' performance of the XWX.

2GT: Just for grins, here's a comparo; the charts I used don't indicate rim width, but I imagine a common wheel was used.

need4speed: We've hi-jacked the hell out of your thread! What's up with The Rims? I see that the seller pulled the auction. Were you able to snag 'em? We kinda ran off on a tangent; hopefully you were able to interpolate from our comments & pictures, regarding fitment of early 308 rims, to partially answer your original question. Obviously, exact measurement of offset & backspacing...or first hand testimony from someone with experience running the wheels in question on a 246...is the only way to find the complete answer. You may have to let US know!

Coop et al,

The auction was pulled and I wasn't in the running. Again, I was just curious. I've said it before that if someone (PLEASE!) makes a 16 inch version of the Campy wheel, I'd be all over that. I'd love to get a set of 14 inch wheels even with the cleaning issues mentioned but I've not been able to locate any.

No worries about hijacking this thread. I was enjoying the posts intensely. Especially when pics are attached. Never get tired of seeing pictures of Dinos in all various setups.

Tyre size on the 16" from the 328 is on the front: 205/55 VR 16 and on back: 225/50 VR 16.
In my opinion 16", even in 5 star design looks too big for the small Dino (see red car)
But the Campagnolos are perfect size due to same reasons.

Coop, That's a great front 3/4 shot of your Dino. Dino Club Germany, thanks for the fantastic group Dino shots (as well as the silver GTS). The older I get, the better Dinos look to me! Fred

 

I think the issue is the tire profile. Current tires are very square shouldered. Versus the old school tires which ballooned more. The roundness of the older tires fits with the roundness of the Dino. I've also observed that owners have either kept with the 14" originals or moved up to 16" combinations. What ever happened to 15"? Maybe it's a perfect compromise?

 

I had the same idea some years ago when I got a set of five star Chromodora wheels from a Ferrari 400.
These are in 15" and had the same design.
Tyre size would be something like 225/60-15.
Three things stopped my project:
1) the wheels are very heavy, due to heavy original dedicated car (400/412)
2) The dinstance between wheel center and the outside (don´t know the right word) is different.
So the brake calippers from the 246 touch the inner contact surface of the wheels.
3) I had to work with spacers and longer screws and after all the complete wheel was moving outside the fenders.
Unfortunately I have no picture of the trial.

 

Front: 205/55-16
Rear: 225/50-16

These two sizes (F&R) were standard fitment on late 80s and early 90s Porsche 911s.

7" rim width works perfectly for both tire sizes. No bodywork interference issues.

 

I feel like if the front were lowered about an inch, it'd look right. Also, that's the first I've seen of a dino with no bumperettes, very smooth look. Very nice pics showing the various options.

 

I saw a Dino with maybe BB or 400 wheels and it looked great. Don't know what alterations were needed to make them fit. It took part in the Tour Auto in 2007.

With knock off wheels is it a really rare view.
But it looks greater than 15" ?
