I am sure that is there for contract reasons. Most likely until the end of the year. In fact the sponsors may still be paying the teams until the end of the year.
They need a new title sponsor to come in with funds for engineers and to ensure that they can stay away from pay drivers. All the best, Andrew.
Hypothetically speaking, if I was looking to make a major long-term investment in F1, I think Williams is the perfect candidate. They have plenty of F1 heritage, are presently second only to Ferrari in Constructor's Championships, have engineering facilities in place, cars on the grid, existing fan base, and really just need money for the right hires and development in the right direction. The team look really on the ropes at the moment, finishing dead last in the championship and losing staff, and, with a competitive Williams team something a lot of people would love to see, if you (or company) could save them it would make you (or company) look pretty heroic in the eyes of the long-term F1 faithful. No situation is hopeless, and it might well be easier to save Williams than start your own new F1 team - a perfect entry point into the sport for someone who wants to make a major investment in that direction. It'd be a great story for someone as well as Williams. I'd title-sponsor / part-buy Williams if I was confident that I could bring sufficient resources to the table to turn them around. Absolutely. All the best, Andrew.
Good luck to that. I think it would be a case where enthusiasm wins over realism. Williams is in trouble because of bad managerial decisions in the past. So the management would have to go, including Frank Williams, before I would even consider putting any money. But that is all hypothetical, obviously. In all honesty, F1 is a business, I am not sentimental or against some culling. When a team is past its shelf life, it's better to shut down, like any business. Brabham, Cooper, Lotus were also WCC and went out one day. That's the only way to make room for newcomers too.
Would you have looked at Ferrari at the end of 1973 and decided it should end? I mean it's placing in the constructors championship went from 2nd in 1970 to 3rd in 71, 4th in 72 down to a lowly 6th in 73 with not a single win. Obviously a team on the way out that had reached the end of it's natural life! Don't forget Williams were 9th, 8th and 9th in the 2011, 12 and 13 respectively and that was with the fluke win in 12. The next year 2014 they were a very well earned 3rd. Things can and do change. I would say everyone in Williams is well aware of the issues and trying hard to turn them around. I predict either 2019 or 2020 things will start to improve for the team. They's got one of the hottest new talents to come from the feeder series in George Russell and a wise old head with Kubica. I think they will be fine.
Williams Racing announces a partnership with PKN ORLEN, a leading player in the fuels and energy market. PKN ORLEN prides itself on innovation and technology whilst retaining a strong focus on value creation. PKN ORLEN will have branding on the rear wing, nose, intake system and both mirrors of the FW42. In addition, their logo will appear on the drivers’ helmets, driver and mechanics overalls and on team kit.
The last 3-odd years they have been working on drag reduction instead of downforce. This year, the downforce did not reattach itself when the DRS closes; leading to instability in braking and at turn in.
They've had the Merc PU from the get-go...plenty of time to unlock a good number of the mysteries of getting the most out of it. Even a mediocre chassis should have put them mid-pack. Instead they easily have the worst performing chassis on the grid. No excuse for that at all. They've spent the last 3 years going in the wrong direction without any indication they know what's wrong or how to fix it. I though Paddy's move to team would turn things around but clearly it's gotten worse.
