Williams are in far better shape off-track than on it

That Williams has today reported increased turnovers and strong profits across the group for 2018 is no surprise, notwithstanding the Formula 1 team’s disappointing season on-track.

As a public company – listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange – the company’s executive team runs a very tight financial ship. Plus, of course, the bulk of Williams Racing performance income was based on 2017’s results, when the team placed fifth.

In addition, last year the team had existing sponsorship contracts with such as Martini in place. On top of that the Stroll family’s contribution was substantial, said to be in the vicinity of $35m. This arrived in part by way of a network of linked sponsors, hence brands such as JCB, Bombardier and Canada Life on the cars, in turn reducing Stroll’s exposure (note these now appear on Racing Point’s bodywork).

The bare 2018 numbers show an increase in F1 revenues from £125m in 2017 to £130m (+4%), with earnings before taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) remaining constant at £16m. This points to higher costs of going racing, brought about mainly by calendar growth to 21 grands prix over the previous year’s 20 rounds. This amounts to exactly four per cent in a sport hit by rising costs – underscoring the tight financial controls.

Williams Advanced Engineering again showed encouraging growth, with revenues rising from £39.5m to £44.8m, with EBITDA, though, staying constant at £5m. The division was established to support the F1 team financially, and clearly it is a case of mission accomplished, particularly as WAE delivers cutting edge hybrid/electrification solutions, for which it received the Queen’s 2018 Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

“Our Formula One team had high expectations that we could build on four years of very solid performance in the FIA constructors’ championship, but unfortunately we struggled to maintain the pace of technical development and endured a difficult season,” said group CEO Mike O’Driscoll with reference to last year’s performances.

“There is a very large gap in competitive expenditure between the leading teams and the rest of the grid, but we are increasingly hopeful that Liberty Media’s long-term vision and plans for the future of the sport can deliver a more level playing field on which all teams can compete fairly.”

That paragraph, though, encapsulates perfectly the challenges facing this legendary operation going forward: how to compete against teams spending up to three times the Williams budget, and with the might of motor manufacturers behind them, which in turn provides their teams with sponsorship leverage.

However there are suggestions in the paddock that the value of the ROKiT title sponsorship deal exceeds the $15m paid by Martini. That, combined with its Orlen support via Robert Kubica, means Williams remains on a sound financial footing despite finishing last in 2018. A portfolio of six new sponsors largely off-sets the loss of an estimated $10m in F1 monies.

The expected formal departure of technical director Paddy Lowe, currently on “leave of absence” from the team, is likely to be an executive distraction, although a source acquainted with the situation previously indicated that Lowe did not avail himself of the share options offered when he joined the team ahead of the 2017 season. Thus, any severance will not be as messy as it may have been.

The current engineering team is jointly led by Doug McKiernan as head of aerodynamics and Adam Carter as head of car design department. In addition, Patrick Head, with whom the team won 16 world titles and still a minority shareholder in the company despite having officially retired, returns to the team as a two-day/week technical consultant, primarily focusing on internal structures and processes.

The challenge for Williams is delivering a fast, reliable car on time – not easy for an independent team operating under F1’s de facto A/B team structure – while keeping its head above water through to F1’s reset in 2021.

The Williams F1 team is far less valuable now than a few years ago, I would have thought.

As things are, soon or later the Williams family will have to throw the towel I guess.

I guess the Williams team did Big Daddy Stroll a favor for turning him down earlier. Now he has Force Canada (Racing Point). I'm betting this Rusky isn't offering much.

Its time, Frank and Claire need to go if there is any hope in the tram moving up the grid. Don’t know if this is the best buyer, but the sport has moved on and Williams has not followed. The only real success they have enjoyed was due to the vast superiority of the Mercedes PU in this early turbo hybrid era, but they lost the plot long ago.

Baku 2019 FP1--> William's is seeking compensation from the damage of the unsecured manhole cover causing a Redflag thereby nullifying the rest of FP1 as Marshall's had to inspect over 300 manholes throughout the track.

Russell and car took a 4g hit. If the manhole cover was 15mm to 20mm higher, it could have been worse for Russell since he literally sits right above that area that was damaged.

Estimates look to be in the hundreds of thousands. Williams stated that the chassis is repairable but it must be done at HQ and cannot be repaired locally.

I would'nt be surprised if the FIA Marshall's and/or stewards gave William's leniency to bolt on a whole new chassis (only spare they had) overnight with regards to curfew regulations. I would IF I was a marshall or steward.

Regardless of the budget it is quite common for a team to seek compensation from an event organizer when they display negligence that costs them money.

Russell would mop the floor with Latifi who has been in F2 as long as the series itself. It could however come down to money as Latifi has enough family money to get papa Stroll's attention and they have spent like crazy to give him an F1 shot.

Yes, execute. Follow the HAAS philosophy. Bout time too Claire; long overdue. Only way to survive in this hybrid era. Gotta cut payroll and engineers for those not needed of said supplied parts.

Williams studies for the first time buying parts from external suppliers

Change of philosophy in Williams. Those of Grove consider modifying their position regarding the purchase of pieces. Until now, the set was defined as an independent team capable of manufacturing all parts of their car, however, Claire Williams admits that they are studying to acquire some parts from external suppliers.

Williams is an independent team since its inception and nothing seemed to indicate a change in philosophy. The Grove are going through a bad time: they did not arrive in time for the first day of the preseason and their cars are much slower than teams like Renault and Toro Rosso.

Claire has been forced to deny the continued sales rumors about the team throughout the year. Many have suggested to the group the purchase of parts from companies outside of Formula 1 to save costs and be more efficient. Although Claire refused at first, now it seems that there has been a change of course, because she admits that they study that possibility.

" We are currently analyzing if we should do it, Williams is proud that we design and manufacture all the parts ourselves, which makes us an independent manufacturer, but if that has negative consequences for the efficiency of the company, that is something that we have to try, "Claire said in statements published by GP Today.

"We believe that not being on time in the tests could be a consequence of this, we are currently analyzing this with respect to the smaller pieces, should we design the flat bottom if there are experts who could possibly do it more efficiently with respect to time? How about the price? That's what we're doing now, "Williams said.

The standardization of parts, which is expected to arrive in 2021, is really a salvation for Williams , but while it arrives, the team may have to resort to external suppliers to survive next season.

Comparing the Williams visually to the other cars on the grid, I don't see any obvious reason they should consistently be a second slower than any other car. Does anyone have any idea where, technically, they are falling so short?
