Somebody will of course tell me that search is my friend because I cannot believe nobody else ever mentioned this. I did search and found nothing. My side view mirrors make quite a lot of wind noise. When I move my hand around the area it stops. This happens even at low speeds but of course increases as speed climbs. Is there a clever fix other than wrapping the support arms wit duct tape ?
I think you will find that the hole in the mirror stalk is probably one of the culprits . Extensive wind tunnel testing has proven the holes to be a major noise gererator. I guess i'm just surprised that you can detect mirror noise over the noise coming from the engine . You're driving a coupe i'm guessing ?
And it really is a PITA. I hope your suggestion helps but it's not a whistle just a wind rushing sound. It seem like the hole would whistle more. I am going to tape it up and give it a try.
I was told, but certainly cannot confirm, that the split mirror stalk was conscious design to improve airflow into main intakes. I guess the noise/whistle is a likely side effect, as the shape of the stalk is much like an airplane wing and probably does all sorts of goofy things to airflow.
But sticking a piece of rubber between the stalks did stop the noise to a great degree. Now I need to figure what to do next. I cannot drive around with rubber stuffed into my stalks.
My CS also makes a lot of wind noise near the right mirror. I'll try taping little spoilers under the mirror and stalk.
That sounds like a good idea. The thought of a spoiler occurred to me too,but I stuck little adhesive bumpers on the stalks in an attempt to spoil the flow. No luck. It was only a half hearted attempt though. Once i found out just how much less noise there was with the foam rubber between the stalks I resolved to keep trying. Here is a photo of what works. Not too good looking though. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I love the sound...... why, because it's supposed to be there. Those 'holes' direct air into the main engine intakes behind the doors. Nothing like a good whistle to tell you that you are cutting the air well.
Mine whistles art lower speeds, turns to plain wind noise at higher speeds. The real culprit is the gaps where the mirror pivots to fold in. You may want to try tape over those gaps. Dave
I found that if I have someone toy with the angle while I'm driving, I can almost eliminate the noise.
