79' 308gts. driver side window switch is being goofy. it will power down the window, but not up. passenger side is working fine, but the driver one has started this little nasty habit. it there a easy way to "pop" out the switch without damaging anything and inspecting the contacts? what say you? thanks, joe
The problem is that the switches and other stuff can get somewhat bonded to the leather over many years, and possibly damage it when they are finally taken off. I think it's a matter of being slow and careful...separate it all around from the leather with a dull plastic blade, then wiggle it loose until it comes out enough to pull with your fingers.
I just fixed mine, and it was the solder that attached the tab in the switch to the wire. The only place in the wiring they used solder and that's where it failed. I replaced the wire from the switch to the motor in the door before I figured out where the problem really was. It was hard to locate, because the wire is crimped at the end of the jacket to hold it in place. The crimp doesn't make the electrical contact, the solder does. My switches pop right out. I've got an 82 Mondial-8 and it can't be that different from mine. Once you see how they go in, you won't wory about popping them out afterwards. Thor
Isn't the bottom of the switch accessible through the door handle hole so that you can check its not just a loose wire on the terminal
I have a 79 as well, and yes you can take the switch apart without damaging it. It's actually quite easy. I took my switch apart a few months ago, so I'm going by memory. Pull the switch up out of where it's installed in the door. Be careful if it's in there tight. Once the switch is up, you just squeeze the sides of the body of the switch with your fingers, and you can remove the top rectangular piece of the switch. After that top piece is off, you can remove the inards of the switch. Just do it slowly because the inside springs are easy to lose. Jim
boy i sometimes forget how easily these cars come apart. i think i am almost more afraid of over-thinking something and breaking it vs. overpowering it and breaking it. took the switch out. cleaned all the contacts both male and female ends. hit them all with some WD-40 and put it back together. turned the key and tested the window switch before sliding it back into the door. everything is back to A-OK. thanks guys
