It looks like Vista but works better. No worries. Unless you think you'll miss Vista?

I've got it on all my boxes and it's miles better than Vista 32 and 64.

    Miles.

But you are getting a Dell, so don't get your hopes up.

edit: There's not too much different GUI wise from Vista to W7 EXCEPT the knob-assed new Taskbar...which is easily changed to the old style that just works.

Still haven't gotten my copy, I was also supposed to get a free copy from this guy that lectured our CIS class about it. Never got it :(

Oh well, I get my free copy since I bought a new laptop when they were offering the free Windows 7 upgrade, I've used it before since my cousin works for Microsoft and it was not bad at all.

I've been using the eval copy for about a month...it seems more efficient than XP or Vista...the only problem I have noticed is a few unexplained whire opaque screens of death where the program seems to hang.

Windows 7 is the true successor of XP. Vista is rather on one level with Windows ME ;)

As a heads up, if you are a college student or have really any connection to one you get the upgrade for $30.

My advice, Windows 7 is really great, much better than XP or Vista, but wait at least a year and let the bugs get worked out (SP1 or SP2 for Windows 7).

    Thanks,
    UZY

    :D

In fairness, it does seem that 7 is their most highly rated release yet [Which is not saying a lot of course!] - But, it's supposedly not the resource hog etc that was Vista..... I guess it's dragged 'em into the 21st century at least..... Brings to mind the old:

    "Windows 98 = Mac OS '85" stickers ;)

"Windows 7 = Mac OSX 10.0" maybe? [OSX is now 10 years old btw]

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Bit drastic.

Simply load it up and see if everything runs ok.

If not, move to some other OS. If it does do everything you need, you are set.

Using a Mac is as easy as using as using bread toaster.

I made the switch 2 years ago and never looked back. By the second day I was using a Mac, I felt like I had been using it for years.

...should you ever need some particular PC-only apps you can always run Windows on bootcamp or parallels (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGrvnguqX60).

I've never heard of anyone regretting the switch from PCs to Macs. It's the difference between night and day.

    Honestly, do it.

Come and join the other "Windows refugees" ;)

Really? I have tried switching over several times, and the Mac OS just seems to get in the way. Maybe I am just too deep in the windows mindset.

I agree about them just working and no hassles with drivers, reboots, etc., but I just can't seem to be as productive on a Mac because a lot of the power features seem to be buried deeper, and the paradigm for navigating through the file structure on various storage devices leaves me completely bamboozled. I would like to switch over, and I even did the cold turkey thing with a Mac mini a couple of years ago...but I just kept coming back to my trusty old laptop with XP.

If you have it set up right, and the ability to re-image the OS quickly in case of a disaster (data stored on a different partition), Windows is great. I haven't installed drivers in years, and I haven't had a virus that my software hasn't caught in years. If I install a new software or utility and use it more than 3 times, I update the image. It's a solid strategy and it has served me well for quite a few years.

I would like to try the Mac OS again...but no way could I ever be a fanboy for something with a "chooser".

Microsoft stole the point and click interface from apple and lost a lawsuit to boot back in the early 90s and they still have not got it right. I think it takes about 1 week to get it right.

Agreed. It is the most inefficient interface I've used. Windows has their folder concept perfected.

Actually, Apple (along with Atari, Amiga, etc) stole it from Xerox. Same with the iPod - they stole the idea from someone else. Nothing is really ever new at Apple.

It's a perfect starting point but it's not perfect by itself, although it is pretty solid. There are several folder extension utilities that do perfect the interface, allowing you to switch to ftp, or cut, copy and paste between source and destination(s), or sync, or preview, or whatever, all from within one folder window. Once you learn the keyboard shortcuts, you can absolutely fly around, and if you layer macros on top, you can do a LOT very quickly, such as update multiple websites, create backups, batch resize and rename, etc.

Agree with you about Apple taking stuff from Xerox PARC, but most companies that bring things to market do this. Apple is very successful at executing on basic things in the mass market.

I don't think there is that much of a difference between the latest Vista 64 version and W7.

Agreed, compared to Vista in the early days W7 is tons better.

The upgrade is super easy is you are on Vista. All your data remains intact and so do most of the settings, incl. network and connection to your xbox.
