    Lately my PC has slowed down substantially. I have an anti-virus program and I am running Microsoft's anti-spyware tool as I type this. I just noticed that the icon for my recycling bin has disappeared even though the text still shows up. Any suggestions on tools to figure out what's wrong, fix common problems, get it running well again, etc?

    And problem solved. I opened up the task manager and watched it for a few minutes and a process was taking up anywhere from 15-30% of the CPU at all times. It was tied to the software installed to setup my wireless router/range extender.

    It was one of the Pure Networks Platform Service's installed with the Linksys Easylink software. Still don't know why it suddenly became angry and decided to consume that much of the cpu resources but once it was uninstalled all was good.

    Doing that also restored your recycle bin icon?

    Strangely, after the restart it was indeed back.
