I think I made a mistake. I decided to reinstall Windows XP Professional on my Dell 8100 Insirpon Laptop last week. I used the CD reinstall disk (but did not use the restore option so my files should still be there) that came with the computer. The reinstall took about 4 hours and when it was done all I had was the blue screen of death with a message that Windows encountered an error and was shutting down to prevent damage to the computer. There was also a message to run chkdsk /f and anti-virus. Problem is that I cannot get pass the blue screen of death. I tried to load Windows XP through the safe mode and still no luck. Any suggestions as to how I can at the very least gain access to my files and transfer them on to my server? Do I have a virus or a bigger problem? The local computer company wants $125 an hour to fix the problem and will not limit their bill.

I find it amusing that a future awyer is complaining about the proposed billing structure. :)

In all seriousness, I hope you are able to recover your data.

Well, theres this program I used just a few days ago that can be used to recover some data and get your computer running again but I totally forgot what it was called. If I could get some help here, basically, it runs like a fake Windows OS and can and ALWAYS will boot up from the CD. I think it was called Win tools or something like that. But you could always use Ghost to recover ur info. Have you tried using a boot disk??

Computers now a days are disposable items, even if its only 1-2 years old. I have taken crashed laptops to Circuit City/Best Buy to try and save data. HAH. The first thing they recommend is a new drive - 1/2 the cost of a new computer, and of course you can kiss your data goodbye...

I hope someone on here can help you. If it were me, I would go to the my favorite local charity and donate the computer for a FMV of, say, 1000-1500$ ( ;) ), and get a nice tax deduction. Then buy another one....

Since when? Desktop or laptop? Sorry, this is completely false in either case.

Regarding the BSOD, what does it say? Not all the hex codes at the bottom, but at the top. It will say something like 0x0000000B Inaccessible Boot Device or something similar. The number and description is what you need to write down.

My job is tech services... so I'll try to help as much as a I can... problem is I'm not sitting there in front of the computer and so I can only do so much.

But I've got a couple questions for you. First off... when you see the BSOD, can you write down the exact error message you are getting. It should be one of the lines across the top and it will have underscores between the words.

Also, do you think you could walk me through exactly what you did when you reinstalled the operating system? Go ahead and restart the process if you need to, but once you get to the final step don't continue, just tell me what you did there.

    Finally, is this under warranty?

first thing I can tell you to do right now is DO NOT use a file recovery program yet. If you try to use a recovery program now you run the risk of overwriting the very files you are trying to save. The best option right now is just to get it booted into windows enough to the point that we can access your cd drive and burn the files you need to cd, or use an external hard-drive.

Last year I tried to fix a sony Vaio...Price new 1100$...Likely resale value when it broke, possibly 600-700$. Price for new drive, $299, PLUS 1-2 hours to install (150$) PLUS cost to reload programs, etc....

Easily 1/2 the cost of a new computer. Please note my DRIVE CRASHED, it was a hardware failure.

Then that makes sense. The Vaios aren't user friendly and shelling out for someone else to do the work exceeds the drive's value itself. The drives shouldn't be more than 80-120 for a good 5400 rpm notebook drive.

Thanks guys for all the help (I will just ignore the wise ass comment about billing and lawyers :))

Below is the error message that I have been getting. In short, I have tried about 4-5 times to install the software, but stupid me forgot to plug the power cord in each time and I lost power during the end of the install. Last night when I did the install I had the power plug in and left the computer during the install. It did ask me several times at "34 minutes left" about hardware drivers and whether or not I wished to continue. I answered yes each time I was asked (about 30 times). When the computer was at "7 minutes remaining" I left the computer and when I returned I had the blue screen of death.

Again, this computer has seen better days and I just need my data (outlook file, home pictures, home videos, word docs, etc). any help is appreciated.

    Ken

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF9E55640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

In the earlier days, the 7B was referring to an MBR virus like monkey.b However, in later years, it has come in line with a few other possible scenarios.

I'm unsure about this particular drive itself, infected or not. If you believe the data was corrupted or infected for any reason, I'd advise you to boot up to a CD, which has a virus app on it, and of course, able to run as a bootable CD. Scan away.

Possible scenarios - You buy another drive, reload the OS on that. Install AV application. Buy an enclosure for your current micro/laptop hard drive - connect up via usb (slow but efficient enough) and copy the data back over to the new drive (if it is still present)

And the lawyer billing comment was quite funny, given that people ask for help with their systems, don't care to learn, just want it back up and working now. It's always an emergency, this is also why I should bring a cot into work. The 125/hr is profit from experience and know how and also a deterrant for you to handle your own problems. I use it on issues I'd rather not bother with. Sometimes, you are just opening up a can of worms and the time spent can far exceed the hardware value of the item itself.

They are only ripping you off.
I think there might have been a problem with you reinstalling the OS, can't say for sure since I wasn't there for the process. If you just want your files back, just take out the hard drive and set the jumpers to slave. Then plug in the slaved hard drive into another computer and take your files. I guess...

First, ANYONE who does not backup their DATA before making major changes should be....

    With that said, see:

Looks to me like you have a device driver problem. i will not give any advice on how to get that HD to work in your laptop AT TYHIS TIME.

Frankly, i would get a hard drive reader/hardware/driver for your laptop hard drive and use a DIFFERENT computer that is booted up and look at the now problematic hard drive and copy/backup files from it using the other (working) computer.

First your car, now your computer???

Maybe it's a mobile virus, hopping magically from place to place among your most treasured personal items.

    Better hide the Bentley.

Sorry to hear your troubles. I'm computer illiterate, and don't mind paying the going rate for a professional recovery.

Actually, I usually let the professionals do the installs, too. After all, if we all do everyone elses' jobs, where is the trickle down economic effect?

    Good luck with it, bud.

I gave in and called the computer geek. He will be at the office tomorrow. I tried to save a few bucks, but after spending an hour on the computer I am already behind and losing money.

The Ferrari is fine and the problem was a melted Digiplex. I had 2 spare units so I am good to go. The Bentley got us home without a problem. The entire way home all my wife said is "I told you so! We should have taken the Bentley instead of the Ferrari. After a long and hot weekend, it was nice to have a car that was comfortable, quite and has great A/C (well, great A/C for an English car).

    Ken,

I think it's a smart move to get help. Even if you just get them to backup your data and trash the computer.

I used to have a computer consulting / Network Design business. I had this client contact me once in a panic because her firm needed to print out some output for their client and they couldn't get the printer to work. They were a 15 person PR / graphic design firm. So, I stopped what I was doing and went over. I plugged the printer cable back into the printer that had gotten loose and left. I forgot what I charged them, but it was fair for my time, but ridiculous for what I did.

I hope that made you laugh.... keep your chin up. I can almost guarantee that they will get your data back.

Why did you reinstall XP? XP is very stable unless you have a virus or something. Drivers causing problems can be dealt with without a lot of mess.

    Good Luck

That just means you might need a smaller screwdriver, or a torx screwdriver, depending on the make of the laptop. There are still hard drives in notebooks, and you can change them if you want to tinker with it.

It's just more of a challenge!

The "NO" answer was the master/slave configuration and moving jumpers. You need an external case in order to transfer files via firewire/usb.

HOLY CRAP! This must be a new virus. The exact same thing happened to me last week. It took me 3 days to get past the blue screen of death, I couldn't even reinstall windows with the Microsoft XP disk.

What I ended up doing was mess with a bunch of settings until I could get into the XP setup screen, then reinstall XP over the old XP without formatting so I could get into my files that were not backed up when the computer crashed, this was a hassle since I had to go into the administrator account and take possession of the rights to my now damaged original user account to be able to copy the files that were not damaged, then I had to format the whole hard-drive, then I reinstalled XP onto a separate partition so next time window screws up I can reinstall it without erasing or damaging my files.

It was a pain and I lost some documents and files but now all is ok. I have spent all week getting my computer set back up the way I want it.

Guys. I am happy to report in 20 minutes flat the computer geek was able to copy all of my data onto my new computer. He took the hard drive from the old computer and put in into a little box and used 2 USB cables (one for power and one for data transfer) to transfer the data. Pretty neat if I do say so myself. Total time charged was 1 hour. Not bad.

Ken, glad it worked out. I told you I thought it would.

These guys deal with this stuff all day long.

FYI - I have a removable drive that I backup to regularly. So, if my computer goes out I still have the data.
