Sorry to hear about the issues with replacing a windshield. Not looking forward to it if it happens. Would using "Road Wrap" help reduce the impact??? I think it would be worth experimenting with materials. I have been thinking about it since reading the insurance issues and pricing plus the headache of not driving the car. It would be worth an ticket if stopped. I find most police would ask to have it removed on the spot and possibly let it slide. But either way it would be alright with me. Any thoughts? Materials and trimming???
Sounds like a good idea but I think the best policy may be to hang back from trucks and other cars especially if the road surface is bad. I guess you read my thread, sorry if it has caused one more thing to worry about. Like we aren't paranoid enough?
Paranoid, not at all. Thanks for sharing the info, and sorry to hear you had to go through this. I think you'll do fine. The big thing is you'll have your car back and these cars are special. Even hanging back you can pick up the most freakish objects. A friend of mine in Carlsbad CA, took his just prepped 328 for a drive. No one else on the road, and still came back with a few "beauty marks" on the front. All in a days drive to be sure. You have to enjoy your car and not be crazy about everything but I am sure there is a way to solve some little rock becoming a major problem.
As Robert suggests the best thing is adaptive driving behavior....... But there is tons of debris on the roads, so sometimes fate plays a large role in the situation....
I found several companies that manufacture windshield protection. One was called Clearplex. There are several You tube videos. The one that shows removal looks as if the tech will be pulling the window out. Looks to do the job, used for outback use.
I'd have to see proof that a thin membrane will protect against the kind of serious stone strike that causes an ugly crater in or can crack a glass windshield. I've had several windshield (and worse) stone incidents over the years commuting 20 miles a day through strawberry and veggie fields where farm vehicles reseeded the road with stones almost daily. A stone strike concentrates considerable energy on a tiny point of very brittle material. A membrane can't distribute that. It would, though, provide protection against the common small strikes that cause little chips, and against the nasty pitting that accrues over time. I'd also be concerned about the soft membrane standing up to wiper streaking or rubbing . Bottom line is that low deductible "comprehensive" is wise on exotics.
DWPC, Check out the you tube on Clearplex. There will also be several other products claiming to protect against chips. I went to the website and there are several demonstrations for a show and tell.
So, I've researched a few products (Clearplex, EcoShield, Bray Film & S Tec), but does anyone have experience or recommendation of one over another one? I'm leaning towards the newest ExoShield film which has a 2 year warranty and claims not to scratch due to windshield wipers. I'm a firm believer in RainX, so I don't use the wipers that often, but I don't know if I can put RainX on any of these products yet. Thanks
