Yesterday I attempted to repair a small chip in my windshield using a permatex repair kit. The chip WAS the size of dime, now its the size of a nickel ( I know; I should have known better). Today I called a repair service and admitted that I tried to fix it myself and was told I ruined the the glass. The guy said I contaminated the glass and that their repair wouldn't work. Anyone here had a similar experience? Assuming this guy is right, I'm gonna need a windshield.

I'm afraid the technician is correct, JV. Chip repair is best left to the professionals. I've had two chip/star repairs on other cars in the past done by Safelite and the results were satisfactory. All that was left was a 1.5 mm defect where the technician drilled into the windshield to inject the resin. I don't think it's possible to remove the material you injected and start fresh. I seem to remember the instructions given on Safelite's website included a warning not to contaminate the crack with glass cleaners or even rubbing your finger over the crack.

I would still have a technician come out to look at your windshield. He might be able to at least "tone down" what you've done.

Thanks for the advice Barry. Safelite will be here Wednesday. If all else fails, Lyle Tanner appears to have reasonably priced replacements.

Will be soon available trough this company. Price is, I think, worth asking. They promised to make new patch of around 20 windshields for GT4, when I a week ago asked it. I personally know the owner (Antti Wihanto), maybe some of you also do. You can tell my regards.

Safelite came today and repaired my windshield. I'm guessing my attemped DIY repair failed because I didn't get enough of the Permatex "stuff" into the damaged glass. The tech acted as though his repair would be permanent. I didn't volunteer that I tried to fix it myself and he didn't ask. Maybe I dodged a bullit.

    Hey Bob.
I don't have any before pics. I'll try to post the repair pics Thursday. Or maybe I'll wait and post them with after pics of my buffing results. It seems my daughters cat likes to use my car as a Jungle Jim at night. Even without front claws the cat managed to scratch the hell out of my hood. I hope she won't miss the cat too much ;).

I'm happy this worked out for you, John. If you drilled into the glass when you attempted its repair, the tech certainly knew. Anyway, the Safelite techs are pros and know what they are doing.
