Just noticed a small rock chip in my windshield. I know my insurance will cover for the cost above my deductible.

My question is does my 348 Spider require some crazy type windshield or is it a common material that a local repair guy would stock or order.

Anybody with experience with this ?? Just curious before I start to make phone calls.

P.S. In North Carolina they can not repair a windshield if it is anywhere in the drivers view / side. Stupid law.

    Hi there,

For what it's worth, I have worked for an Auto Glass company that is owned by some family friends the past 2 summers for a little extra money while attending college. The company I worked for is relativly large, and has some national credit, as it has warehouses throughout the country and is a fairly large operation. I only mention this to give a little bit of credabilty. My employer knows what he's doing :)

That said, he has only ever done a few Ferrari windshields, as Ferrari's (or any real exotic car) are relativly rare in my part of the country. To answer your question, no, ferrari windshields arn't anything special - they would use a normal windshield like any other car. I would assume you could use an aftermarket brand, which would be cheaper, or have the repair shop use an OEM Ferrari shield, which I'm sure would cost quite a bit more. Expect around $350 for an aftermarket shield, give or take some. Not sure on an OEM Ferrari shield.

However, if you just have a chip, most compitent shops should be able to almost completley remove it. There are some criteria, however. The chip usually has to be SMALLER than a quarter, or repairing it becomes to much of a risk (the whole shield could end up cracking). Also, as you mentioned, most, if not all, shops will not repair a chip that is at eye level infront of the driver (This has to do with the fact that the solution used to fix chips tends to add a slight "warping" effect to glass, making the view wavy in that tini-tiny area. It's dumb, I know).

Hope some of that helps, if you have any questions I'd be more than happy to answer, just respond or hit me with a PM.

    Good luck!

    Travis

$350 for a Ferrari windshield! Deam on...An aftermarket or OEM windshield is going to cost you $1k or more, not counting installation. Check with TRutlands, he always has a good supply in stock.
