My '78 308 wipers work (albeit a bit slowly) when the on-off handle is dropped into the lowest position. But when the knob is put into the middle position, they move halfway across the windshield, pause for a few seconds (it sounds as if the relay comes on again), and then they finish the cycle. Any suggestions as to how to determine whether this is a mechanical or electrical problem?

My guess is corrosion on console switch terminals or contacts. Sounds very similar to the problem I had.

I had a similar thing happen to my 328 a few months back, unfortunately when it was raining. Cause: Loose nut that tightens the wiper arm to the actual motor. Fix: Flip open the cap at the attachment of the wiper blade arm to the motor and tighten the nut. I can't remember the size of hand. Flip down the cap and you are ready to go.

    Good luck, hope this helps.

My 308GT4 does the *same* thing! I've only driven it in the rain once, and I didn't have a choice, as it was the night I bought it and I was driving home in the dark and in the rain from SF to San Jose! I still smile to think about it, but there were definitely some white-knuckle moments!

The contact point on the wiper motor is either coroded, rusted, or had broken off. Open it to check the condition and clean the contact if its not broken.
The contact point is responsible for completing the cycle.

It turned out to be mechanical. A little gun oil did the trick. Thank you for responding.
