About three days ago, a pop-up window started to appear randomly from what appears to be an anti-virus software named WinPC Defender. It alerts us to various viruses, spyware, etc. that they can help eliminate. It will not allow to remove the pop-up window and we cannot find the software on our hard drive to eliminate.

    Please help.

Malwarebytes is an excellent start. If you can't download it or it won't install there are some other tools that we can try. Post again if you need more.
If Malwarebytes runs make sure to scan the system completely at least 2 times. I would proceed as follows:
    1. Get a copy of ATF Cleaner. http://www.atribune.org. Double-click to run, check all the boxes.
    2. You didn't give your operating system but I'll assume XP or Vista. Turn off system restore. Right click "My Computer" select "Properties" then select the "system restore" tab and check the box to turn it off.
    3. Run malwarebytes complete or full scan. Reboot. Repeat.

For what? Malwarebytes? Malwarebytes runs just fine on Vista.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, WinPC Defender was a tough one. Downloaded the malware and about half a day later, all is fine. Again, thanks.

WinPC Defender can be a tricky one. First of all, it uses a rootkit to block anti-spyware/anti-virus programs, so you might need to change the setup file name of MBAM (or whichever anti-spyware you're using). Either way, probably the best method to handle this bastard is manually, even if it's somewhat of a hassle:
