On both my F-car, and on my Expedition, the wipers chatter and squeak if the glass is anything but very wet. I know Ford has quiet wipers; the (Lincoln) limo taking me to the airport has them. F-cars, don't know.

I have tried Ford, Delco etc. and all else I can find in Toronto. Will be in US Jan/Feb; anyone have a good recommendation for both vehicles?

    Thanks for all help!

I find a fresh application of RainX makes the wipers much smoother.

Which is really just a coating of wax, Quick Detalier works as well and you probably already own it.

Softer wipers make less noise but wear faster and vice versa.

As far as I understand it there are no brand wipers for specfic vehicles, such as "this wiper only fits a Ferrari 456 GT". Wipers generally sell by size. You normally do not need to buy the entire piece but rather just the blade which is the rubber insert.

First I would measure each blade so I knew what size I required. Then I would go to Google and search "quiet wipers" or "quiet windsheild wipers" and I suspect you will find quite a few online dealers selling the softer composite blades you desire.

REMOVE WIPERS IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i REMOVE WIPERS FROM ALL MY NICE CARS. tHEY ARE A STUPID DESIGN AND DO NOTHING BUT SWISH WATER AROUND and mark up winshield. These cars have nicely sloped winshields so rain-x work beautifully. THE CAR will look WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY better without them as well. Much cleaner look.

You have to twist the arm so the blade isnt scraping against the glass on an angle. Its hard to explain but what is happening if the blade chatters in one dirrection, the arm is twisted slightly so the blade isnt perfectly perpendicular to the glass. It folds under in one dirrection but not the other and actually hops accross the glass, this is a common problem on any car and a simple close inspection and a little tweeking of the arm will fix the problem.

The chattering is most likely caused by a build up of "road grime". This is most easily removed by washing the windshield with something like laundry powder in a solution. It is very harsh, but removes this grime effectively. Just be careful to avoid the paintwork.

Apart from that, just go to AutoZone and get new blades. Blades can get hardened over time and/or UV exposure. $6 well spent.

Agree, properly cleaning the windshield and installing new wipers is the best solution. The two products I have heard used to clean the window perfectly clean is detailer's clay bar or Bon Ami powder. Follow with regular window cleaning agents. The clay or powder gets all that crap in the glass off, so you start out with a smooth, clean surface to wipe.

So every one says new blades and clean the glass with these magic rocks and voodoo. what a bunch of crap. Pete has already tried new blades. Sorry but I see it daily at work and fix them with my simple and free sollution, after you guys buy 10 sets of blades, try twisting the arm like I said, this is a solution handed down from the auto manufacturer I work for and applying some slippery crap to the window shouldnt be required.

I agree that rainex is a great product. I've been using it for years. I even used it and the windshield washer cleaner they make for the enormous frameless glass shower enclosure in my home. Don't laugh, it works and greatly reduces the shower cleaning job. I use no harsh cleaners anymore. It works terrifically on the marble in the shower as well.

But ... at slow speeds you still need wipers and even at higher speeds depending on the type of downpour. You'll just use the wipers a lot less.

Ditto on Rain-X. My wipers have two speeds: slow and slower so it's a must for those of us who drive a lot. Just be sure to apply it EXACTLY as the directions say. You MUST clean the glass completely, twice, to avoid smearing. No shortcuts. The final result is amazing so it's well worth the effort.

Newmann, I'm sure you are right, but isn't a wiper blade very flexible? How does it know if the arm is exactly perpendicular to the glass? The rubber blade itself is bent over at an angle anyway.

Thanks guys, I hadn't realised there were so many options. FWIW, the blades are new, and the windshield(s) clean. It also chatters on both wipers, when it does it. I'll start with Paul's solution --like the price -- if that doesn't do it I'll move on to the others.

Forget Rainex or any other snake oil. Go find a set of Honda wipers that fit your car. You'll say nice things about me until the day you die.

Why are you driving an F-car in the rain??!!?? Simplest solution -- if rain if forecast, don't take the car out of the garage. ;-)

Yeah, what they all said. Rain-x, change the blades, make sure the arms are set correctly, keep them clean.

I'll have to agree with Newman on this one. Warped wiper arms are normally the culprit when wipers chatter.

It's not snake oil. The stuff works. It's also not a solution to bad wipers. Get the wipers fixed.

Another thing to check is wether your windshield really is clean. Sometimes you need to use a very fine polishing compound to remove buildup. That can cause streaking.

However, it is nice being on the highway in the rain and not having to put your wipers on except in very extreme circumstances.

I was under the impression that Rain-X works great at first, but they do not last very long so you will have to re-apply them rather often. And if you do not re-apply, they can actually be the cause of wiper chattering as the blades will be "skipping" from areas that still have Rain-X to areas that has worned out.

I usually just use regular window clearing agent (streak-free) to clean the windshield on a regular bases.

True. RainX doesn't last long. I do my car a couple times a month when I'm driving daily. I don't mind it.
