This is really a basic question. How are the sparkplug wire loom holders changed out? I have an 85 308qv and many of the holders have broken off due to heat damage and only the posts are left in the cam covers. I have purchased new holders and I’ll be darned if I can figure out how to install them. They are in two parts, the holder and a pin. The new holders don’t seem to slip over the pins left in the covers. I tried removing one of the existing pins and it broke off at the cover.

    Any help/suggestions/guidance would be appreciated.

Does anyone have experience replacing these clips?

Is breaking off the old posts and drilling out the stubs the only way to install the new clips?

I know this is a minor question but some input from someone who has done this would be greatly appreciated.

On mine- they just twisted out, and twisted in. There was a little pin in the middle, but I just pushed them into the cover with a screwdriver. Friction is holding them in just fine. This is for a euro 308 qv.

If there is a plastic piece stuck in the cover and you can't get pliers on it- a screw extractor will do the trick.

If your are careful you can drill them out with a cordless drill. Those little plastic pieces are a PITA to get to on the front cover. I had mine off to replace the gasket and put new ones in then. T-Rutlands has them.

Thanks for the responces guys. I got a set from T-Rutlands (made in Tiwan!?). I guess I'll just have to be carefull working the old pins out. The ones by the firewall are going to be a real PITA.

    Thanks again. John

    John,
I know you've got yours on by now, but for anyone else I think I understand these holders. First you have to clean the old bits of plastic out of the holes. I was lucky and was able to blow some out with compressed air. Then you simply place the holders in the hole and drive the pin in. This allows for proper orientation. If you screw them in, how can you be sure you're going to hit the bottom of the hole and simultaneously get the proper alignment. I used a 1 pound hammer and 1/4 drive extension as a punch. They seem real solid.

The theory is that the pin spreads the claws and holds them in.

In "theory" you can screw a small self tapping screw into a tiny pilot hole you drill into the pin, then grab it with pliers and pull the pin out, which in "theory" releases the holder so you can just lift it out... without turning or anything.

Fitting new ones is the reverse.. put the holder in, then tap the plastic pin in with a punch.....

I found the clips to be over size when I last bought some, meaning the wires were loose in the holder, but that was while ago now.
