Many of the people on the list like "Cork Adams" and he does have a sterling rep. Nice guy on the phone, too. However, he was significantly more than Dayton Wire Wheel when I had them do the Borranis on my Ghibli. They did a great job, pretty fast as well. They'd also done the knock off spinners on my GTC. Quality work and fair price both times. steve meltzer "unencumbered by the thought process"
I spoke with Dan a year or so ago about reconditioning the Borranis I have but have not moved forward on getting anything done, so can't comment on quality or price. Ironically, I spoke with Dan Rhodes two days ago, about the loss of luster on the Borranis I put on my GTC. Nice guy and he had the answer. Despite using 3 or 4 different polishing compounds, the wheels were still dull, tho' not the spokes nor knock offs. He suggested "Mother's" and viola, it worked! Very cool. steve meltzer "unencumbered by the thought process"
Daytona wire wheels uses inferior spokes, I do not recommend Motion Products is send wheels to CORK Send wheels to Cork at Precision Wire Wheel
Valley Wire Wheel in Van Nuys, CA. 818 785-7237 They do great work including Pebble Beach Quality cars. Mike is a true craftsman. they also work on alloy wheels and disc wheels etc.
He did the wheels on the "P" cars....they were a little weird too.... The best costs... In the spirit if full disclosure, these guys ARE expensive, take a while-but there is ZERO disappointment.... ...you get what you pay for in life... Cork is good too...if you are going to show the car....and want to take NO chances, i'd use Valley-IMO Cork has done a great job on other stuff, just have not used him for any "over the top" jobs...so I can't say one way or another in this regard....But, I would expect similar results... In my experience, with Dayton, I have....." no comment...."
I sent mine to Cork. He gave me the choice of original type plated steel spokes as well as stainless steel. john
Bob...I have used these people on 3 different occasions over the years...always with great results (all Borannis'... 365GTC/4, 375MM Spyder, 250TDF wheels) ..It has been several years ago, though...and, as always, do Ur homework before U jump into anything..which is why U are here in the first place... Good luck...
Wire wheel is not a 100% solid item, but is designed to live a little, which makes the work hardening of stainless steel a real problem. It would be very interesting to hear first hand experiences with stainless spokes, but I think most people go silent when they run into trouble...
Most people in the states are not using the cars to any performance level. There are a few Ferraris at the track or on spirited rallys, but that is a very small percentage of cars getting wheels restored. Most race guys, my self included, buy new wheels with big (steel) spokes from Borrani. The are new, rims are spun and a stronger truer wheel than its predecessor. Most people dont know or experience the difference, stainless, chromed steel or steel. There are also different manufacturers of spokes, this also makes a difference. I have 500 wheels in stock and tens of thousands of spirited miles on wire wheels. I have a strong opinion, based on knowelge and experience. I have made my own mistakes. Chasing the cheaper rebuild, didnt work.
I really appreciate all the help and suggestions. I have also heard of both Valley and Cork Adams. Dayton was, as I recall, very popular 25 years ago but I know of nobody who has had work done recently. Since my GTC is an everyday driver, I'm not interested in "Show quality". The wheels are original and never rebuilt or adjusted with well over 155,000 miles. They have a number of small nicks but they are structurally sound. I really just want to have the nicks repaired. A recent incicent led me to think of a cosmetic rebuild. Thanks again, Bob Z.
