I know I'm way behind the times to be just now getting into this, but I have recently set up my wireless network for my laptop (802.11g). I want to connect my xbox and two desktop computers to said network. I suppose I'll need two 802.11g desktop network cards, and I think I'll need a network adapter for the xbox 360. Because I don't need the "newest thing" on any of this, and I am not opposed to buying used (eBay?), what should I be looking for?

My router is a $60 Belkin 802.11g with High Speed Mode router from WalMart (not one of those newfangled MIMOs or anything). Anyone have any "on the cheap" recommendations?

Linksys make good stuff, can't go wrong with their cards, avoid Netgear.

I tollerate Linksys, but I have *always* had problems with their base stations locking up under moderate loads. Every single one I've ever owned over 4+ years will eventually lock up. Not mission critical grade, but few consumer electroincs for $59 are.

Netgear, D-link, etc. are total garbage, RUN RUN RUN.

PS: Get yourself some Linksys Wireless Gaming Adapters for your fixed computers AND for the x-box. They have ethernet ports out, and the host system needs NO DRIVERS!

Aren't Atheros cards supposedly the best?

Although I don't see the need unless your home is huge or you have a lot of dead spots.

I've had a Linksys card crap out on me before, so at my girlfriend's place I just opted to outfit her with the cheapest G-Card available ($20~). Works fine with her Linksys G router too..

I hardwired my own desktop computer because I couldn't stand the thought of going back-and-forth with it again and it's been solid ever since.

Their NIC's are decent, but their other stuff is just so-so...really most anything sold at Chumpies is half shyt and half crap, or a steaming pile of camel pinch.

    Take your pick.

Has 3Com gone back to making decent stuff yet?

I've run lots of Netgear and Linksys wi-fi products, as I use them often for job installs at work. I've had problems with both, but none more than the other. As for NICs, I think a NIC is a NIC in my opinion. Never seen a difference in any of them.
