Don't drive unless you really need to. Conserve, conserve, conserve..... That will help the country in this time of need. If we all used 20% less, for example, that would help a great deal to the impact of refinery and transport issues we have now.

So Please make a conscience effort to not go somewhere.

I, for example, am working from home cutting my commute 35 miles/day. I have instructed our dispatcher to route our fleet very tight and reschedule long runs.

This is the best way we can all help now. I know many of you are on other boards......... pass it on.

What have you guys done to conserve?

My family is buckling down big.

7:15 AM I take my wife to work and 4th daughter to school in the 1.6 liter Civic.

7:55AM My 2nd daughter takes that same car to high school carrying her 2 other sisters and another child who has no other way.

3:20PM I pick up wife at work 4 cylinder Toyota Truck, 4th daughter rides bus home other 3 in Civic home. Grocery list is attended to on way home.

Total use is about .5 gallons per day.

Hope it doesn't take long, this is a royal PITA!

Since we have about 90 gallons in various siphonable gas tanks, we should be good for ~150 days considering a few side trips. :)

My wife has started carpooling with two of her coworkers and we've cut our travel plans for the weekend. It's not much, but it's a start.

Rode my motorcycle instead of driving the car. But given the gas I saved, i'm probably going to take that big ol' 12 out this weekend. Am I bad?

I wish I could do more, but my office is 24 miles away and I can't work remotely. On a good day, my car gets 20mpg. My wife works from home so doesn't need to drive much. I eat lunch in the building.

I got around Ft. Worth via mountain bike today, my car has been parked since this morning. Any short trips around town I can do with the bicycle.

Wow, these are great and I would estimate more then a 20% decrease. Pass it along and this will really make a diff.

I was thinking today that this is the best thing we can all do to help in this time of need.

    Any more stories?

I typically drive under 10 miles during the week and at the most have a 80-mile round trip to the g/f's house on the weekends. With 9mpg (city), I'm pretty used to conserving already (even though such a concept is foriegn in Los Angeles).

The only thing I am going to change is the time which I drive.. typically my car can get over 20mph if I'm moving at a consistent 70mph. Staying off the freeway during peak hours (which means around 9pm-6am here) will keep gas usage down.

Seriously, what's going to happen to all the people that commute 50 miles each way every day? They're hosed!

So, if this became the catalyst (sorry) for a grass-roots initiative to wean us from unbridled consumption of that wicked petroleum, we could soon be in a position to tell Saudi Arabia to **** off. (Or whatever your 21st Century fantasy is). Problem is, too many fat ****ers driving SUVs. THey'll get right back on the crack as soon as the emergency passes. What do you think?

    Good point about drive times.

It is only a change in consumption that will help. So even though your not a big guzzler during the week you still need to reduce. I suggest you and your g/f get net cams and cyber date one weekend. ;)

you can start to give my parents money if you want. They both drive at least one hour to work everyday, and at least one hour back home. They work in DE.

I commute 30 miles each way to work. Besides not going out to eat on lunch, I don't know what else I can do. I already drive a 4-cylinder truck. I may just ended trading it in on an even more effecient car. I have slowed down a little. That's helped.

I think you might be right.... but, I hope your wrong. I think promotion and education are "grass route" ideas that we need to instill in people.

If we can conserve we can help the truckers that supply the distribution channels and keep costs down on many products.

    We need this..........

Can you carpool? Telecommute one day a week? Drive non rush hour?

Your ideas of a better fuel efficient car is a good one.

You obviously don't know me that well! :) Just because of that I'm also going to make the 60 mile trip to Crystal Cove this weekend as well!!

    Just kidding. Maybe.

I've already modified my routines and I've optimized them. Cutting out BJ's and sex with a hottie doesnt factor into that equation, MmmmK?

    Slowing down does help.

I have a double cab 4 WD Toyota Tundra. I had it in Charleston this week to work on a house, and drove it home today. Kept it at 67-70 MPH where I usually go 75-83. Documented an even 20 MPG in that huge thing (211 miles with 10.5 gallons). I usually get around 16-17 in it. Slowing down really does help.

So it will now get parked til all this is over and the Civic and 4 cyl Truck will get used.

There's no way we're moving in together. I'm big on space, namely my own.

I think my profile still has a pic of her, it usually does.
