This question is beginning to haunt me!

When the paint shop has finished putting on the laquer do they then buff the car up with some kind of wax, if so would it not be best to inform them that you will carry out this process as they are surely going to use an inferior product to one that all discerning owners would want applied to their beloved cars? Or is there a special system/process for new paint?
    Whats other peoples experience?

Jim S, you've just had your car repainted what did you do?

    Regards G.P.

I'd be VERY surprised if they are using Lacquer.

Probably 2 part (color and clear) paint. No lacquer, no rubbing out the paint.

    Check with your painter.

Once the clear is on you can wax to your heart's content.

Graham, as Dave suggested, more likely that there is a clear coat above the paint. Most shops will wet sand the clear to remove the "orange peel", and then compound the surface.

After waiting a month or so, you can wax it. The paint shop will not wax the car. They sand and compound.

    Hi,

.....you should really wait about 60-90 days before waxing new paint, as it is still "drying" during this time period...

    Graham,

....and once it is done "drying" I would recomend Meguiars NXT Generation wax. Don't know if you can get it in the UK, but it is awesome. They also make a quick detailer spray (NXT Generation) that I use for cleaning the car between (rare) washes.

One more thing, I use microfibre cloths to remove the wax or to wipe off the quick detailer.

    Good luck.

You need to ask your painter what kind of paint he is using. Is your car a solid color, if so, it could be a single stage paint or two part color and basecoat. You mentioned laquer. Are you really using an acrylic laquer? That is a paint that actually needs time to cure. I figured it had been outlawed in the EU. It's illegal to use in California and some other states due to VOCs. The modern paints are chemically related to plastics. They don't "cure". What they do is chemically "crosslink". Think of mixing epoxy glues. Same principle.

My paint is new and I used this NXT wax and did not care for it. It seems liked it never really hardened and just smeared rather than polished. I've read this same complaint about the new Turtle Wax "Ice".
Next time I'll go back to Meguiars Gold.

Costco is a good place to get microfibre towels.

Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax! The NXT paste wax is completely inferior to the original in my opinion.

I've had a PM from a guy over here in the UK who has the Mutts Nuts of a Dino, which he does a bit of concours with, and he has told me to use ZAINO products of which my fellow men in the US will obviously be well aware of!
    What do you think?

I've used EVERY WAX known to man on my Dino.

    Yup, tried 'em all.

Zaino produces a superior effect, but it is a lot of work.

Mix the way with the hardener, use the prep polish first, two or three coats of the wax, each coat has to sit for a while before you buff, BUT NOT TOO LONG or you'll never get it off!!!

I like the end result a lot. But, I get just a nice a result from Griot's "best of show" wax, and they have a new poly wax that's pretty good too.

NXT is good, but doesn't seem to hold up very long or have as deep a shine as real carnuba wax.

And buy a good random orbital buffer. Saves a ton of elbow grease, and won't burn the paint. Porter and Cable makes a nice one.

I like these guys for supplies: http://www.properautocare.com/

Geez, this is starting to sound like a post from that detailing site. What's the name of that again? www.autopia.org I think.

I also have tried every polish/wax known to man (slight exageration) and found them all very close to each other. I recently bought the random orbital polisher and polish/wax system by Griots Garage and found it to be MUCH MUCH MUCH better than anything I have ever tried on everything from my one owner 1973 Jaguar E Type (laquer paint) to my modern vehicles with multi stage, clear coated paint jobs. The shine and color is deep and clear and better than I ever thought possible. It is much better than what the best detailed in my area has been able to accomplish and the process is simple, easy and somewhat theraputic. I look forward to doing my Dino over the winter.
