In the midst of replacing CV boots and axle seals in my ‘81 308 GTSi (US version) I discovered that the speedometer sensor is loose and wobbles. I can’t loosen or tighten it (it spins freely in either direction) and it wobbles side-to-side. The speedometer works fine.

It screws in from the top but I can’t see what it screws onto or into. It looks to be the “Type 1” as shown in the first photo. Is this likely to be just the treads in the sensor that are damaged (meaning I only need to replace the sensor), or is something in/on the transmission case damaged?

I’m tempted to leave it alone because it’s working, but since I’m already there this might be the time to address it.

    Has anyone seen this before?

Yowza. That's amazingly loose. Must have been loose for a good long while to have augered itself out like that. The sensor screws onto the male threads of the speedometer drive body (#53 in the diagram below) and should not be loose at all. Time for a new sensor, at least. You might want to also remove the drive body to clean off all of the metal 'paste' that appears to be present, and to inspect the male threads. To do so just remove the screw (#54) and pull up. There are O rings on the drive body that will probably want replacing as well. I would clean up the area a bit before removing the drive body so no crud drops into the gearbox.
