Just curious if anyone out there bought just 1 Ferrari and own it for more than 10 years and plan to keep it for life? I am just curious the possibility and what kind of cost to expect after maintenance and warranty are out.

I am just an average middle working class and I save for many years to finally able to buy the new 2018 488GTB. My plan is to keep for life but I started to feel and worry what if you need to do something on the Ferrari, the cost is more than triple or quadruple compare to regular cars even using the same materials. For example, I have the Mercedes GLA full vinyl wrap and it costs me $1200 but I am quoted $2800 just to wrap the roof of the 488GTB. It costs me $600 for complete windshields/windows Crystaline tint but I was quoted $900 just for the 2 windows!

I know I won't have to worry for next 83 months but after that....not too sure. Wonder what is the cost to have service done at the dealership? I have heard some ridiculous figures like $400 just for oil change even on the very old model like 308, 355 and etc. I assume 3rd party would also charge fairly high but slightly below dealership?

Anyone want to share the experience?

F355 for me coming up to 8 years = £ 2000 per year @ 1000 miles per year

If you can get an oil service for $400 then grab it with both hands .... at least you don't appear to have started worrying about depreciation ( yet )

You might get some 458 figures in that section to give you an idea as no 488 are out of maintenance period

Essentially its probably going to be $ 2000-5000 per year including tires etc for basic maintenance I'd guess

As is so often said here the maintenance and parts will always be related to the original cost not the actual value so to try to maintain such a complex car on a shoestring is not fair on the car and could increase the likelihood of problems

If this expenditure could present a problem you could always trade after 6 or 7 years for another new one or just sell it and think wow what a fine time I had and unlike so many people I can actually say I owned a Ferrari

Don't forget in a few years both your finances and the economy could be very different

    Tan,
I’ve had my Spider for just shy of 9 years.
It’s averaging about $2K per year with no major failures.
Great when all I have is a yearly fluid/filter change.
Other years, it can equal the purchase price of a small car....
    But she’s definitely a keeper!

why not save over 100k and buy a clean 458? the savings will surely allow you to sleep at night more than the performance differential in the 2 cars if you plan to mainly drive on the street. buying a brand new model late this late in production makes very little sense if you are playing with finite resources.

to answer your question these things can be and will be expensive to take care if you are comparing against cars which cost 1/3 of the price new. its that plain and simple.

Originally I was looking for 458 when I started saving. But when I was ready, 488 was available and thinking of getting the newer model I think I didn't do enough research before jumping into the brand new one. I never had a chance to listen live in person but based on the YouTube and some comment, 458 sound far better than the 488 due to the NA engine. Same comment from you all or its subjective as very personal preference?

I plan to drive at least 6000 miles a year include couple track weekend. It's not going to be garage queen. Annual maintenance of $3,000 is manageable! :p

Just worry about repair and etc.

Seriously, I should grab oil change at $400 on a 10 years old car? Oh Boy! My 2013 Porsche 911 S (leased and already returned) oil change at dealership is less than $100 and they are same synthetic oil. My Chevrolet is even cheaper :D:D Yup, I know we are talking completely different level!

At some point, I think the service charge ridiculously higher price just because you are driving Ferrari/Lambo/Bentley and so on. After all, oil is oil and the process of changing oil is more of less the same? Not just oil change but apply to others like Wrap, Car Wash, Detailing, Repair Tires and etc.

Perhaps maybe it will take me a while to get use to the upper class ball game. I wash my own car anyway so money saving there....LMAO

Maintain the car religiously, drive it but don't abuse it and you'll be OK. As you meet other owners you will find the best, and most cost effective, places to have repairs done.

7+ years owning my 360 3 pedal. Maybe $800/year? It's been really good to me.

You can afford the car, or you can't. Parts are very expensive. They're not cheap.

When I decided to buy my Ferrari, I included a very realistic cost of ownership. I may have been able to afford a 458, but it would have been stretching it, and would have had nothing left if something serious broke. I would have been comfortable with a F430, but a little nervous if something serious broke. I choose the 360 (My opinion the deal of the decade). For me it fit perfect, was well in my budget, and I can handle a big "Doh!"
    Cheers

6000 miles a year with track days will increase that maintenance cost. Might have to get a new set of tires after a year like that. And depending on what your track day looks like, probably would require a brake flush afterwards, maybe some other stuff too.

    Makes Porsche's seem cheap. :)

Seriously, I never thought of that. I thought I can afford the car and that's all. Only after, then everything starts to kick in. No regret for me. I am going to start flipping burger at night to feed this lady.

I don't see how you can make a fair comparison between a new late model Ferrari and one that's over a decade old...they aren't the same cars even if they have the same marque.
I didn't even consider the experiences of 308 owners when I bought my 360.

I've owned my 458 for four years and would like to keep it for many more ... my biggest worry though isn't so much the cost of repairs and maintenance, but the actual feasibility of doing it, for such a "high tech" car. In ten, twenty, thirty years, will (m)any workshops have the computers and equipment required to look after such a car properly?

The cost of wrapping something is irrelevant.

$400 to change the oil in a 308? That's absurd. Mine is about $97 including oil and filter.

Purchased my 2003 360 Spider January 2008. Have averaged all of 660 miles per year!! I do not plan on keeping it for life as I have it offered FOR SALE in the classifieds section. This car has been a very good "first Ferrari experience" as I am looking to purchase another.

Please check out my ad and let me know if you know of anyone looking for a beautiful, well maintained Ferrari 360 Spider that is ready to roll.

Porsche ownership is generally less expensive than Ferrari. And even relatively old models are still reliable if maintained regularly. And you can do many miles pretty much worry free.

I'm a financially responsible guy and although not super wealthy, I get to enjoy multiple cars as a hobby. To make a crude analogy, a Ferrari is like Veronica in Archie comics while a Porsche is like Betty. It's nice to have a hot date once in a while although you don't want to keep such company too long/too often. So I'd say get a 488 and enjoy it while under warranty for peace of mind as an F-car is really something worth owning at least once in my opinion.

You will take a hit when its time to sell but you will not have unexpected costs while the car is with you. And as you are used to Porsche where things work pretty much all the time, be prepared for the unexpected with an F-car as their interior finish just doesn't stand well in certain humid weathers and you will probably get computer errors every now and then.

I have had quite a few Ferraris that have been around for a while:

    348...... 20 years
    F40......6 years
    TR.......11 years
    308......11 years
    CS.......8 years

As for costs, you don't have to be a 'hostage' to the dealer or indies, and suffer the 'Ferrari tax' if you are good with a wrench. I have serviced all mine, as well as driven them as intended. Don't wait too long to get one....... you'll regret that you didn't do it sooner! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
