extensive description:

This European specification, left-hand-drive Plexiglass sliding-window model Ferrari F40 was ordered by Fabrizio Violati on October 15, 1987, at the official marque dealership Sa.Mo.Car SpA in Rome, Italy. His order number for the car was '11146' and on July 8, 1991 the finished car's Certificate of Conformity (No 205) was issued by factory engineer Corrado Cinghi.

Factory invoice No 2141/A was issued for the car on July 15, 1991 and on the 23rd of that month this F40 was sold by Sa.Mo.Car SpA of Via Salaria, Rome, to Leasing Sanmarinese SA of Via 5 Febbraio, Domagnano, San Marino for the declared purchase price of Lire 305,000,000. On July 29 the F40 was formally leased to Stelabar SA of Via Paina, San Marino, and on August 13 it was formally sold to Fabrizio Violati. He promptly drove the car as race number '82' in the September 28/29 III Historic Grand Prix of the Republic of San Marino, at the Imola race circuit nearby.

Fabrizio Violati retained the car as a prime exhibit within his Collezione Maranello Rosso displays in San Marino and latterly at Falciano, still within the Republic, but on the road eastward towards Rimini.

As offered today this Ferrari F40 Berlinetta has the correct chassis and engine numbers, the correct chassis tag and assembly number tag. The car also features the optional Uniball-jointed suspension system, and its odometer upon delivery to Bonhams showed 5,350kms – this modest figure (as with so many others amongst these Maranello Rosso cars) again being considered probably genuine. As with all the Maraneloo Rosso Collection cars being offered here we obviously recommend the closest technical inspection and any required recommissioning before the car is used again in earnest. However, this low-mileage, long-preserved example is clearly worthy of the most serious consideration...

would it not be possible to just put plexi windows in any f40?

 

Sure, but I'd imagine this one was delivered that way (I have not checked).

 

89460 was delivered new with plexiglass sliding windows.

nice pics marcel.

personally i would not want the plexi windows. cant see out of them after a while, they stick, pia to pay tolls or get rally tickets etc. glad i dont have them.

 

slightly OT but I noticed yesterday that the plexi F40 currently for sale at HRO London has a red interior on the door unlike on my car
Is that standard on these cars?

Its not the same car, the one for sale at HRO and currently in the window is the ex-UK demonstrator car reg E274BGT

They look to me to be LM style doors.

Correct, and plexi-window cars are rare, that's why some have never seen these red door-panels.

 

I understand only the first batch of F40s came with the plexi-glass as standard, and those cars were made in a separate part of the factory. Then as production ramped up in the main factory plexi-glass was switched for normal windows. I get there being a premium for the original batch, not for later cars with plexi option. From a user pov, I drive the majority of times with my window down. Love it. I'd find the plexi-glass very restrictive. That all said, any F40 makes me go weak at the knees

 

Interesting that this later car, 89460, has factory plexiglass windows. Although not terribly practical, I like the look of these sliding windows and their accompanying simple interior "panel" as it is true to the car presented on July 21, 1987.

Mr. Massini, there are those that claim only the first 50 cars were equipped with these sliding windows. Yet in period, I seem to remember the very early cars having a mix of the two styles of side windows. The fact that this later car is so equipped proves part of these claims wrong, is it possible you know how many cars were so equipped? Thanks in advance.

 

I agree- that is exactly how I feel- this is a later build car with some rare features. I think it will bring a strong number.

 

My 1990 88xxx car has plexi windows, they were also an option on the later cars.

Only 56 plexi windows cars made, much thinner layers of paint on these cars, you can clearly see the carbon structure of these. Hardcore imho!

The one Valerian is talking about went for £761k including commission.

 

so has this car sold yet? given the 89 reported sold at 680k sterling on the other thread, this plexi window example ought to go for more like 800k imo
