Got the scare of this entire restoration last week. I was sorting out the small parts for shipping off to the platers and as I started counting the metal spacers for the plenum,1,2,3,4...7! Where was number 8?! I looked high and low and could not find it anywhere. The car is away at the body shop, so I had been worried about getting a boroscope and looking in the heads and pray is wasn't there. And then, what if it wasn't? Could it have fallen in past a valve and into a cylinder? What would I do then?

Well, this has been worrying me for a few weeks. Then today, my 3 year old brings me one of his toy trucks with all the 'tools' than he puts in the back of it. There's a paperclip, a few coins, some Lego pieces.....AND MY 8TH PLENUM SPACER! The little stinker must have pocketed it when he was helping me break the car!

So that's a BIG worry off my chest!

Why that little!:) hehehe, anyway what a relief, I would be scared s***t too, but normally I use a telescopic magnet and swirl it inside the cylinder through the spark plug hole, but if it's none magnetic then I use a small long vacuum hose and try to suck it out.

I think your boy is just holding it for you cause he's afraid you might drop it in the motor.:)

Guess what...I pulled the plenum yesterday and I am missing one of the spacers! I was carefull taking it off and heard a "clink", looked down the port and the valves were closed at the same location but no spacer. Where did it go? I will keep looking till I find it

Man, believe me, up until today, I felt your pain! If you're not seeing it in the head, check all over. Did you hear it 'plink' more than once? I've seen nuts and stuff like that bounce to some weird spots when you drop them.

No...I think I only heard it plink one time...I could be wrong...there is so much crap all over the motor, dirt, grease...you name it. It could have sunk into a valley down there for all I know. As I said I pulled it strait up and back when I heard the sound. It was missing from the left side over #3 & 4...both valves are closed and I don't see it in there. Swept the floors, etc. Still nothing. This could take days ;)

I am going to try the vacuum or blast it with compressed air just in case I can't see it. Of course a magnet wont help..they are aluminum.

YES !!!!! I just found the spacer!!!! What a releif...it fell below one of the cooling hoses onto the top of the motor. I was pulling all the hoses and there the sucker was...just laying there in all of it's glory. This IS better then Christmas morning ;)

I am now holding off on removing the intakes...they are practically welded down anyway ;) I'll just do a nice cleanup and repalce everything in that area.

Hmmm...I am still sweating from trying to jimmy them off...they simply wont budge! Looks like they are there from day one.
Any safe ways you know of. I have already tapped them with a mallet, etc to try and shock them but no luck ;(

My feelings as well. Is there something that can be done to keep those washers from falling out, like lifting the plenum up just a little and sliding a piece of paper or something over the intake pipes to keep stuff from falling in them?? One of the reasons I've been hesitant to remove mine.

Good question...and I'm sure there is a way. The problem is the studs are attached the the box and not the runners. There is about 1/2"- 3/4 " before the box is clear of the intake so it should work.
