So Merc is going to test the new megaphone exhaust. I'm anxious to hear some clips of that and see what it's all about. I hope something leaks if they don't release anything official.

Amazing how the turbo cars of this generation sound nothing like the beasts so the 80's....plus they are ugly as sin.....

It's pathetic. In the past horrible shapes were attemps at technical innovation and experimental. Now they are mandated idiocy.

Dual exhaust /twin turbo(80's) vs Single exhaust/ single turbo (today) has something to do with that.

Sounded like flatulent big mommas and poppas yesterday on track, it's embarrassing compared to what we know F1 is supposed to be

Everybody is saying that no big changes in the sound could be expected from this mods, bigger changes should be done and Mercedes already has said that they´ll veto anything. We´ll have to get used to it.

I´d be happy if they change the noses for next season.

this modification will not help, real preblem is turbine installed on exhaust pipe which killing pure sound, revs limits and numbers of cylinders doesn't matter when you have this crap in exhaust system

Like I keep saying, real problem is single exhaust/turbo setup.

80's 1.5L V6 Twin Turbos, dual exhaust had no problems in the exhaust sound department, and they revved just the same or less than today's cars.

    Here's the famous MP4/4

Yes the prior turbo era cars sounded much better than today's-again a massive rethink needs to be done in this area as well.

That acutally sounds close to an F1 car. I could live with that. The sound is just part of the excitement. When you hear that unique loud sound, your brain just tells you something cool and special is happening.

    Variable pitch Trombone exhausts.
They can play Edelweiss or Beauty and the Beast or a list of others depending on the circuit.

Sounds close to an F1 car? That IS an F1 car.

Yeah... I know that. I'll rephrase:

Sounds close to what an F1 car "should" sound like.

I haven't been able to watch a complete broadcast yet this year. I keep telling myself that I'll give it one more try and maybe I'll get used to both the sound and the look. I get about 15 minutes into the broadcast and then it's "I can't take this anymore" and off to something else.

I truly hope they can get both the hideous noses and muffled sounds addressed so we can get back into the sport. I'm terribly concerned that if they don't address it soon the audience is going to leave which will drive down the revenues and then it will take years to ever regain the pinnacle of the sport they had. Unfortunately, it may be too late since it would take at least a year to ever regain any semblance of what we had.

I'm just like you - go to prerecorded and skip chunks out of the broadcast and go to the end.... Looks like it is Hamilton's one man show this year.

Same here. If a diehard like me is uninterested, that's bad for the sport, as I can imagine the casual fan is really turned off.

Aside from everything here; the races are so F-ING BORING!

I really thought these changes would help the show. Shuffling a few teams around hasn't produced exciting races.....

+1 here as well. No desire to spend hard earned cash, after attending 21 races over the since 1992, Montreal last year may be my last one to attend. I just feel very fortunate to have been able to go when it really was exciting.

Nope as many have explained the last round of turbo charged F1 cars also had turbines installed on their exhaust pipes and they sounded fine.

    Issue is:
    1. Lack of revs due to the more torque focused modern car thanks to the electric motor
    2. Lack of revs due to saving fuel
    3. 90 degree v6. 90 degree internal angle is very wrong for a v6 and there is not a good sounding 90 degree v6 engine ever built, including the Maserati Merak.

The main cause though is the lack of revs because of 1 and 2, but they will never sound awesome.

In Australia they used to race single seaters called Formula Brabhams. They had the v6 out of the Holden Commordore in them which is really the Buick v6 remanufactured and I believe this engine has a 90 degree internal angle and the cars sounded horrid. So horrid they mandated a single exhaust pipe to try and make them sound better ... so be thankful we do not have 2 exhausts on these F1 cars.

My favourite engine is the 6 cylinder ... this should have made F1 cars sound awesome but they failed with the stupid 90 degree angle.

So they can make the cars louder but who cares??! They will still sound terrible. Doesn't look like there is much that can be done about the sound quality/pitch - and that is the real problem IMHO.
