I'm skeptical but I wonder what this ended up costing if true.

    ---

There are all sorts of creative uses for GPS, but here's a fellow who says he sent a self-designed GPS "device" in a briefcase to DHL with express travel instructions. He plotted the shipment's movement and ended up with the drawing you see below. We're a bit confused. First, he says he developed a GPS device with extended tracklog and battery time. Okay, but... using what, exactly? Also, we've received some things from DHL, and we have a hard enough time just getting them to deliver stuff to the right address, let alone make circles in the Caribbean in the name of art. To be fair, his documentation looks complete, so serious kudos to him if this is all for real. Peep the travel instructions document that he says he gave to DHL along with shipping receipts and video after the break.

In the logs it says the package went to Guam twice and after looking at the larger version of the map it looks like the package came close to Guam “pointer finer” twice but it looks like it’s a couple hundred miles south of the island. Also none of the longitude and latitude on the travel instructions match Guam.

However with that said I do remember a news story a bit back about a possible bomb threat in the DHS building at the airport.

Very weird, the plane made a 90 degree turn in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. There are no islands for hundreds of miles.

According to the website, he gave them lat/long coordinates for a number of locations. DHL will deliver to a lat/long?

I'm calling BS on this project. Interesting idea, could be done (fairly) easily with a transponder on a private aircraft....but I doubt DHL would be doing figure eights over the Atlantic.

Those of us who are skeptical were right:

Artist Admits He Didn't Actually Use GPS, DHL to Create 'Biggest Drawing in the World'
By Dylan Tweney EmailMay 27, 2008 | 1:39:23 PMCategories: GPS

Swedish artist Erik Nordenenkar claims to have created the "biggest drawing in the world" by sending a GPS-equipped plastic briefcase on a squiggly, looping trip around the world, tracing out a 110,664-km (68,763-mile) unbroken line with the help of DHL delivery planes and trucks. The result: A self-portrait of the artist as a megalomaniacal god with a planet-sized Sharpie and a rather nice sense of line.

Problem is, the project is almost certainly faked, despite the footage showing the briefcase disappearing into the cargo hold of a DHL plane and a photo showing a stack of delivery receipts at the end. Why?

    * DHL does not deliver to arbitrary latitude-longitude destinations.
    * DHL is not likely to consider "trace a few looping lines through the Indian Ocean, without landing" as a valid delivery request, even with lat-long coordinates
    * You can't get a GPS signal inside the aluminum skin of an airliner
    * No GPS system, even with supplemental batteries, would have lasted the 55 days the artist says his project took
    * Details on the setup's "extended tracklog and battery time" are suspiciously absent.

So yeah, we're calling bull**** on this one. Nice picture, though.

UPDATE 5/27/2008: Yep, it's a fake. The artist has added a line to the bottom of his webpage stating "This is fictional work. DHL did not transport the GPS at any time." And DHL confirmed that Nordenenkar never went any further than a warehouse the company allowed him to film in.

But the important thing is, this guy made a name for himself. So what if he had to concoct a big lie. End justifies the means. Maybe he can be Hillary's running mate.
