Kidding, but maybe got ya guys to look

I'm a little more realistic than that......

Been reading, learning and yes some laughing at some of the Ferrari knowledge / stories on FC. You people do sound like a lot of fun!!
Looking for a 348 or poss 355, must be red, must not have a roof,..... that's the extent of cast in stone req's I have formulated. The arguments for the rest of the details are many.

My determinations so far, and this is just a few:
    - 348 - more of raw car / simpler car.
    - 355 - more car / more complicated car.
    - Not so sure on ultra low mile cars, not driven, not exorcised (just like it's spell'd), having said that I think over 40k is alot of miles.
    - Cars without history make me nervous, livable possibly, but hmmm
    - Later 355 as opposed to earlier.
    - Poss better as manual as opposed to F1

My urge to just "buy one" is overruled by some semblance of common sense, but I'll get over that. Been thinking about it for a while and it's time. Not much of a bio. sorry people if you want to know just ask. I am versed in expensive, non-revenue producing activities so that will not be overly foreign to me.

ps: do you guys qualify me? like could I get kicked of the island?

Some of my choices - comments welcome

All three look pretty in the pictures. Number 1 I have seen for sale for a couple of months. I have number 5. Red/ tan F1. The fiorano upgrades are real nice. I am not sure the value they add long term but they do add to the uniqueness of the car as there were only a 100 made. They were the last 100 355s. Number 3 didn't list the milage. I got mine in oct 10 and love it. Put on 2000 miles in ny. If you go in with eyes open and buy a well sorted car you will love it. By the by on oct 28, 2010 it was officially declaired the prettiest Ferrari ever made. Good luck.

Thanks for the comments, so glad your happy with your purch.

number 3 has 47000m on it, according to the pic of the speedo. And they do indicated it is a higher mileage car in the write-up

Hi Tim, welcome from another Calgarian! I'm not yet a Ferrari owner, though, so you are ahead of me.

One caution on a 355 choice, be aware of the government/RIV's 15 year exemption limit - if a used vehicle being imported to Canada is over 15 years old (based on month/year of manufacture on the door plate), then it is exempt from having to meet Canadian Transport Canada emissions and safety requirements. Since the bumper standards have been waived this is not as big a deal for cars less than 15 years old, but you do still have to get a recall statement from the manufacturer on a younger than 15 years car... which is difficult (and very expensive) to obtain from Ferrari. For simplicity, you might want to restrict your 355 search to cars manufactured before April 1996.

since you're buying the car for your dog, skip the 355. the airbags aren't good for him and he'll appreciate that you're looking after his well being. might even let you drive it some. :)

odometer numbers are not always an indicator of true 'condition' ...... that said, have it inspected and buy the best example you can afford ......... :)

Very Good point....he's not a very big dog (in stature) so the air bag thing could be a problem!!!
As you can see by his attitude, he is getting a little impatient that I haven't got
    him his car yet.!!

Just to lay out some numbers for you...You stated 40k is a lot of miles. The 348 was introduced in 1989. Driving that car 2,000 miles per year gets you 44K miles today. I would not consider that "high mileage". A car of that particular vintage that has been meticulously maintained with 60k on the clock would seem just fine to me (3000 miles a year).

The point is the clock means nothing, the records along with a properly calibrated eyeball mean everything.

That is also a good point Saint Batage, I was doing some calculations and thought I was a little light on what could be realistic miles.
You stated it very well 3000 miles / year is not a whole lot, on the right car.
And it always comes down to the car condition / story / history.
As in the miles can be skewed ie: 4500m for the first 12 years and then 40,000 not maintained miles in the next 2 years. or, or like that.

hey, in for Calgary vote :) welcome Tim ....there are a few good local cars around FS a rosso 355 in edmonton a little while back, and a yellow 348 in south calgary too ('vert i think?) a bit ago ...zahir isn't bad to deal with either, but $ will be a bit more with his commission, but he has a finger-on-pulse for all exotics local, so wouldn't hurt to stop by and see what he has or knows about FS ....personally, my vote is 355... it's basically a 348 but improved upon/more refined! ...so really isn't more complex in that regard, really IMO :)

I am going to look at an '07 GT3 this weekend to see if that car is really what they say it is. But when I look at the pricing on 355s and what mine may be worth... the GT3 will have to be really, really good.

I think that may be a reason you see so few good cars, because the pricing is brought down to "market". My car just had a no-expense spared major, I have all the interior done, headers, ECUs, all of it is sorted. And what would I get for it, 55k? I don't think there is anything out there that will make me want to sell it for that. Because sales are so slow, market pricing has become based on "too good to pass up". I think mine may be too good for me to sell.

Thanks ernie, and I have to say sorry for your pain!!!

I'm just curious....did all that really happen? or do you just post that to scare the wanabees off....

And the only other question I had is what did your wife say............
about the smashing and burning part.
Kidding, hope it gets better I don't think I'm qual/exp. enough to say "it's ok. it'll get better"
but I'll follow your posts. And I believe you do provide a perspective owner like myself some insight to see how frustrating things can get........
    Again thanks for the welcome.

Yes, all that and more, but over the course of almost a decade of ownership. That isn't the experience of every owner, just me. It was my misfortune to get stuck owning such a car, and my bullheadedness not to get rid of it. But the 348 Brotherhood gets the benefit of my misfortune, and I the education, on how to repair a 348.

As for the smashing and burning. I was deadnuts serious about that at the time. When I told my wife, her reply was, "That's stupid". So the car lived. :D

Anyhow, don't let my bad experience scare you off. Take your time to find a well sorted Ferrari, and I'm sure you experience will be a much, much, much better one than mine. My biggest mistake was making an emotional purchase. Do NOT do the same thing. When the right car shows up you'll know it. Don't be in a rush.
