    Two Gripes...

    1. What the f^%k was that telephone ringing in the background on qualifying and race coverage for Speed TV? Do these jokers operate in a 2-bit trailer?

    2. Having Bob and Steve sitting in Charlotte NC calling the race while David walks the pit lane seems lame. I wonder how we can get that FIA satelitte downlink and see ALL the coverage?

    and some accolades....

I did think our boys on SpeedTV called a pretty decent race. I enjoy their color commentary. I think they're probably drinking in the midst of the coverage, because their comments become more and more funny over time.

...or, did they seem funnier because I was doing the drinking?

Twice during the race replay I got up from my couch to answer that FRIGGIN' phone.

I thought it was a cell phone in the kitchen.

At least that tells me the surround system works on my TV.

That's not a phone. It's loud audible signal to people in the pitlane that a car is entering the pits.

Huh? We only heard it when the US commentators were speaking. I believe you.... but never heard this before.

I fell asleep during qualifying so maybe we aren't talking about the same thing. During the race and qualifying there is a loud ringing noise (sounds like a cell phone only 20 times louder) that warns people a car is pitting.

if you heard it only when the commentators were talking maybe we aren't talking about the same thing.

I heard it too. It definatley sounds more like a cell phone than a signal. Besides, it only rung twice

    Yes, it's the pitlane warning.

Thanks to everyone that pointed this out! I guess the ringing never registered in my head before.

Now, if only I could figure out how Scott Speed's baseball cap got all chewed up on the visor, I'd be set.

I've always heard pit-lane warning sounds at the tracks I've been to, but never one that sounded like any kind of telephone! Usually they sound like a horn of some sort.

    It's a desk phone!

It's not the pit lane deal.

Whatever it was, it was on the RTL (German) broadcast as well, so it was on Bernie's feed. Sounded like a phone to me: I almost went looking for it too!

yeah i hadnt heard that ringing sound before either. Its probably because at other tracks the warning sound is sort of like an air horn.

... Maybe I wasn't loosing my mind, after all.

(Iceburns288: Scott Speed's hat is a fashion statement?? Looks like his hat was caught in the paper shredder. In F1, we can do better)

It was the pitlane warning signal, just as Flatoutraicing said. God knows why the Australians choosed that bell sound instead of a siren, it was at the very least anoying.

Fortunately, with the time difference, when I heard "my" phone ringing, it was late enough at night that I ignored it. ;) Then the commentators mentioned that it was the pit lane warning.

Thank ${DIETY} that WRC doesn't use that warning. Picture it: a rallye car comes bashing through the stage, and all the spectators are looking down at their cell phones. :p

I fell for it too in qualifying session. Thought that it was Peter Windsor calling Varsha from the pitlane. I have heard pitlane warning sirens before but never such a silly phone ring. Never thought it would be that. Glad to hear that Speed TV was innocent. Now about that Barrett Jackson auction during qualifying...
